E-cigarettes utilize resistance wire for the heating element, but which one is right for you?
In this article, we explain the pros and cons of choosing Kanthal, stainless steel, or nichrome wire.
Understanding resistant wires
Resistance wire is a high-resistance electrical wire often found in industrial applications including electrical ovens, toasters, and heating elements.
And what are the resistance heating wire for e cigs? The regular resistance wires come in three types: Kanthal, stainless steel, and nichrome wire.
1. Kanthal wire
Kanthal is a ferritic iron, chromium-alloy (FeCrAl) wire with bright annealed and oxidized surface.
Kanthal heating vape wire is characterized by:
◆ High consistent resistivity and good oxidation resistance.
◆ Higher maximum operating temperature of 1500°C (2730°F).
◆ Higher resistivity.
Kanthal wire can last up to 4 times longer than nichrome because of its superior ability to resist oxidation. This makes it one of the most popular coils building materials on the market.
2. Stainless steel wire
Stainless steel (SS) is composed of chromium-nickel-carbon and is a highly functional metal.
◆ It can be used for wattage mode and temperature control – if mod supported.
◆ The taste is one of the crispest and clean out of any vaping wire.
It is not recommended to be used in wattage mode unless the resistance in ohms can be locked on the device.
3. Nichrome (nickel-chromium) wire
Nichrome is an alloy with corrosion-resistance characteristics, the common combination is 80% nickel and 20% chromium. There are many other various applications:
◆ Rapidly heats with minimal ramp-up time.
◆ Nichrome has become the wire of choice for a vast majority of e-cigarette coils.
◆ Compared to Kanthal, nichrome has a lower melting temperature (1400°C / 2462°F).
◆ Also, has a lower maximum operating temperature.
In a word, this means that the life span of a nichrome coil will typically be shorter than that of a Kanthal coil. But, the temperature can be ignored as most devices will not exceed the melting point of either metal.
◆ The output power should be matched with the corresponding resistance.
◆ No matter what kind of heating wire, when the power is relatively high, a dry-burn may still occur.
◆ The e-liquid will produce a lot of harmful material such as formaldehyde in over-high temperature when vaporized.
◆ These harmful substances do not exist in normal use.
