1. Huawei Mate 20 Pro - about $1,217
4 cameras: 40-megapixel main sensor
In-display fingerprint sensor
Reverse wireless charging
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro as one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2018. It comes with a 6.39-inch OLED, QHD+ HDR display, a high-end edge-less look and a 4200mAh battery that can last for days. One of the definite highlights of the model is the rear camera setup: a 40-MP main lens (f/1.8), an 8-MP telephoto lens (f/2.4) and a 20-MP ultra-wide lens (f/2.2). On the front, there is a 24-MP (f/2.0) selfie shooter. The phone runs on the Kirin 980 processor and comes with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The main drawback on the phone reported so far is the bulky software that is significantly less intuitive than Android 9.
2. OnePlus 6T - $569.99
Innovative all-glass design
Full screen experience with a teardrop notch
6.41 inch IPS display; 2340 x 1080
According to OnePlus CEO Peter Lau, the sales of the OnePlus 6T in the United States were 249% higher than that of the OnePlus 6 — and there are some solid reasons behind it. The phone comes with a fancy all-glass body and is available in a beautiful selection of colors: midnight black, mirror black and thunder purple. The front panel is primarily occupied by the large 6.41 inch IPS display and, thanks to the extra thin bezels and a small teardrop notch, you get to enjoy all your media without obstruction. The phone runs on the speedy Snapdragon 845 Octa-core CPU and comes with up to 8GB of RAM. Besides, the phone powered by 3700mAh battery capacity.
The potential dealbreakers for some users could be the lack of IP water protection and the absence of 3.5mm headphone jack.
3. HUAWEI Honor Magic 2 - $769.99
6 AI enabled cameras: three on the front and three on the back
Full screen experience without a notch
Kirin 980 processo
The HUAWEI Honor Magic 2 is a true gift for those who are tired of notched screens — the phone gives you a true full screen experience having placed its front cameras onto a sliding panel. The main highlight of the model are the six cameras: there are three cams on the front (a 16MP triple AI camera with a 3D intelligent deep lens + a pair of 2MP lenses) and three cameras on the back (a 24MP monochrome lens, a 16MP RGB lens and a 16MP ultra wide angle lens). The Magic 2 runs on the Kirin 980, one of the strongest processors out there especially for graphics and multitasking, and comes with up to 8GB of RAM.
The main drawbacks of the model would be the absence of the headphone jack and the fact that the phone and its AI assistant are currently only available in Chinese.
4. Vivo NEX 4G Phablet Global Version - $579.99
One of the very first phones to feature a sliding camera mechanism
Large 8.59 inch 2316x1080 resolution screen
Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa Core CPU
The Vivo NEX phablet made waves earlier this year by being one of the first phones to opt for the pop-up camera design instead of the popular notch look. The selfie camera on the NEX 4G is hidden behind the display and is elevated thanks to the built-in micro motor. The phone features very thin bezels and a slightly thicker chin (about 0.2 inches) — the fingerprint sensor is under the display. The screen itself is 8.59 inches with the resolution of 2316x1080 and a 9.3:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa Core processor and up to 8GB of RAM.
Among the main downsides of the phone is the rather weak camera setup: an 8MP selfie and 12.0MP + 5.0MP on the back.
5. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 - $589.99
Full screen experience with a sliding display
Snapdragon 845 octa core processor
Quick Charge 4.0
The Mi Mix 3 is yet another smartone in our list with a full screen notch-less display. The phone adopts a sliding screen design — the front 24MP + 2MP camera is housed on a sliding panel that will appear when you need to take a photo. On the back, there is a dual 12MP cam. The Mi Mix 3 sports a 6.39 inch FHD screen, has very thin bezels and a very thin chin. There is a 3,200 mAh battery onboard and the support of Quick Charge 4.0+.The phone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa core processor and there is up to 8GB of RAM.
6. Huawei P20 Pro - about $1022
First ever triple Leica cam smartphone
Kirin 970 Octa Core CPU
IP67 water resistant rating
The Huawei P20 Pro is the world’s first Leica triple-camera smartphone — and, naturally, the cameras are one of the phone’s main selling points. There is a 24.0MP front camera and 20.0MP + 40.0MP + 8.0MP triple cam setup on the back. There is the Kirin 970 Octa Core processor at the heart of the device there is up to 8GB of RAM. The 4000mAh battery is a definite plus as is the IP67 dust and waterproof rating. The display on the Huawei P20 Pro is not especially big — just a bit over 6 inches. There are also larger bezels and a thicker chin than what we’ve seen on the more recently released models — and a very noticeable rectangular notch at the top.
7. OPPO Find X - about $850
Full screen experience with a sliding display
Beautiful 6.4-inch Curved Super AMOLED display
3D AI Selfie and Facial Recognition
The OPPO Find X was the second smartphone to feature a notch-less design (after the aforementioned Vivo Nex). However, instead of the pop-up camera design, OPPO have opted for a sliding panel that houses the phone’s 25MP front-facing camera with the 3D AI Selfie Capture feature. On the back, there is the dual 16MP + 20MP cam. The phone sports a 6.4 inch Curved Super AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080 resolution and 19:5:9 aspect ratio. There is the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor at the heart of the device with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
8. Xiaomi Mi 8 - $399.99
Great value for money
20MP selfie cam with AI Portrait
Snapdragon 845 Octa Core CPU
One of the most attractive things about the Xiaomi Mi 8 is the phone’s remarkably low price. With that, it’s not at all a bad offer when it comes to performance. The Mi 8 runs on the same flagship processor as most of the more expensive models in this list — Snapdragon 845 Octa Core CPU. There is a large 6.21 inch OLED Samsung display with 2248×1080 resolution and 18.7:9 aspect ratio. Camera-wise, you get 12.0MP + 12.0MP dual back cameras and a nice 20MP selfie cam on the front. The battery is the standard 3400mAh. The downside is that you are getting a screen with thicker bezels (compared to the other models in this list) and only 83.8% screen-to-body ratio.
9. Vivo X23 - $664.62
Full screen experience with a tiny notch
Very small notch with a 12MP cam
Ultra fast charging support
The VIVO X23 is a proud member of the line of full screen devices. The phone comes with a 6.41 inch 1080 x 2340 screen with a tiny notch at the top. The model uses the Snapdragon 670 Octa Core processor and is available with up to 8GB of RAM. There is the standard 3400mAh battery onboard and the support ultra-fast-charging (up to 22.5 watts). The VIVO X23 is not a camera phone — but you do get a decent setup of a 12MP selfie shooter housed on the mini notch on the screen and 12MP + 13MP rear cam.
10. Xiaomi Black Shark - $479.99
Cheapest of the gaming-focused smartphones
Bespoke game controller
The Xiaomi Black Shark is a gaming phone — and this means that it is equipped specifically for your mobile gaming needs. This translates into the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa Core processor, 8G of RAM and a large 4000mAh battery. Weighing 190 grams, the Black Shark is definitely bulkier than the average smartphone — but it houses an advanced cooling mechanism to get the phone through lengthy game sessions. Despite being on the bulkier side, the phone still sports a rather large screen — 5.99 inches — and features relatively thin bezels and chin. The main highlight of the model is a a bespoke controller that attaches at the bottom of the device, connects via Bluetooth and gives you two extra customizable buttons and true console feel.
Which Android smartphone is the best for you?
Naturally, this is not an easy question to answer. This is a good selection of smartphones and we would not go against ourselves recommending any of them for efficient everyday use. Once again, it all depends on what you are looking for. The cheapest and the best value for money option would be the Xiaomi Mi 8, while the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Huawei P20 Pro are the most high-end options of the bunch. If you are firmly against seeing a notch on a smartphone screen, take a closer look at the VIVO NEX, the OPPO Find X or the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. The Xiaomi Black Shark is, naturally, the best choice for gaming. The VIVO X23 is kind of in the middle when it comes to notch or no noth design — as it comes with the tiniest notch we’ve seen. The OnePlus 6T, on the other hand, will probably win a lot of users over with its all-glass body and the HUAWEI Honor Magic 2 offers an outstanding camera setup for much less than the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
