Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 vs. Xiaomi Mi Mix: what's the improvements?
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is the 2017 successor of the Xiaomi Mi Mix released in 2016. The new flagship features ultra thin bezels, a 12% reduced chin size and a number of other improvements.
In this post, we dive into all the improvements and the differences between the two devices in detail — so that you can make an informed decision of which phone to go with: the already popular Xiaomi Mi Mix or the new and highly promising Mi Mix 2.
Screen & Design
The Xiaomi Mi Mix comes with a large 6.4 inch display — but the Mix 2 has opted for a more compact design with a 5.99 inch full HD display. A notable difference is that the bottom bezel of the Mix 2 has been reduced by 12%. Plus, the new model features a curvy 4-sided ceramic body inside a durable aluminum frame. The weight has also been brought down from 209 grams in the Mi Mix to 185 grams in the Mi Mix 2.
The verdict: the Mi Mix 2 prioritizes portability with its more compact design and light weight — while with the Mi Mix you have a more expansive display.
Processor & RAM
The Mi Mix 2 runs on the advanced Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor clocked at 2.45 GHz – a notable upgrade from the Quad-core Snapdragon 821 on the Mi Mix.
With the Mi Mix 2, you also get more RAM: 6GB compared to 4GB offered by the predecessor. There is also a limited edition model of the Mi Mix 2 available offering an impressive 8GB of RAM.
The verdict: the Mi Mix 2 offers a faster and more efficient performance than the Mi Mix thanks to the powerful processor and more RAM.
One of the key specs of any smartphone these days is the camera. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes with a 12MP rear camera with dual tone flash sporting the advanced Sony IMX 386 sensor with 1.25 um pixels — compared to the 16MP on the Mi Mix which did not get the best of reviews. Both phones feature 5MP front cameras for quick quality selfies.
The verdict: if you are looking for a better camera, go with the newer Mi Mix 2.
The Mi Mix 2 follows through with its drive towards portability and sports a smaller 3400mAh battery, compared to the Mi Mix's 4400mAh battery. However, both feature the Quick Charge 3.0 technology that promising to increase the charging speed by 20%.
The verdict: though the Mi Mix has a larger battery, it also has a bigger screen and a more power-consuming processor. Thus, in the end, both phones may offer a very similar performance in battery life.
Edition, Sensors & Price
As we've mentioned earlier, both phones are also available in special editions. The standard Mi Mix 2 comes with 6GB of RAM and can be paired with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of built-in storage. The special edition offers 8GB RAM combined with a storage space of 128GB. Just like the Mi Mix, the Mi Mix 2 comes with Cantilever piezoelectric acoustic technology and an ultrasonic proximity sensor.
The standard version of the Mi Mix 2 with 64GB of RAM is now available for a flash sale price of $589.99 (the 128GB version is $629.99 and the 256GB option is $689.99). The Mi Mix's flash sale price is $489.99.
