The functions of phone are more and more powerful, parts of functions are based on kinds of sensors to realize. This post will introduce two types of common sensors adapted in the phone, and a useful technology: hot plugging.

Hot plugging (or hot swapping)

Hot plugging is replacing or removing hard drives, power supplies, or components without stopping or shutting down the system, thus improving the system's recovery capability, scalability, and flexibility.

For example, some disk mirroring systems of high-end application can provide hot swapping function. Specifically, in academic expression, it is hot replacement, hot expansion and hot upgrade. Hot plugging of mobile phones mainly refers to the insertion and removal of memory card without rebooting.

Proximity sensor

Proximity sensor also known as the displacement sensor, is a metal induction linear device. The function of the sensor is to convert a variety of measured physical quantities to electric quantity. Proximity sensors generally locates on both sides of the mobile handset or in the groove of handset, which facilitates its operation.

When the user is answering or making a phone call, the sensor can measure the distance between the phone and your head. If mobile handsets is held to the ear to a certain extent, the screen backlight will be off, and it will be on when the distance is further. In this way, it is more convenient for users to operate and more power saving.

Ambient light sensor

On one hand, ambient light sensor can sense the surrounding light conditions, and inform the processing chip to adjusts the display backlight brightness automatically, as well as reduce power consumption of the devices. For example, in cell phones, laptops, tablets and other mobile applications, the display consumes up to 30% of the total battery power. The use of ambient light sensor can maximize the battery's working time.

On the other hand, the ambient light sensor helps provide a soft picture in the display. When the ambient brightness is high, the ambient light sensor will automatically adjust the LCD display into high brightness. When the external environment is dark, the display will be adjusted to low brightness. Ambient light sensor need to affix an infrared cut coating in the chip, or even directly coated with graphical infrared cut coating on the chip.
