8 simple habits to speed up your PC like a Pro

Your PC runs slower day by day? PC Pro is here to sharing you some simple tips which can help you speed up your computer with no sweat.

Nobody likes a slow computer, but virtually every user will experience their PC slowing down over time.

It's been 4 years since I got my laptop, and it's still new and fast. Apart from the time and patience invested in the purchase, along with its own great performance, carefully maintaining and optimizing it is one of the main reasons why it has retained its snappy performance. However, not everyone will know how to achieve the same result. So I'm willing to share you my own personal tips – including some simple daily habits to speed up your computer.


Habit #1. Don't install programs/save files in Local Disk (C:)

Why should you not do this?

The Local Disk (C:) is the core system disk. All the PC system-essential files and programs are installed and saved there. Its remaining capacity influences the computer running speed – the less space that's taken, the faster the computer will be.

Usually a Local Disk (C:) is not large. The storage is typically from 50GB to 200GB, however, the exact capacity depends on your PC's whole storage and the manufacturer. Before you get your new PC, some of the available C: capacity is already used by the OS, programs and essential files being pre-installed.

Significantly, when you are downloading and installing programs, e.g. Skype, games, video players, the default location will be set as Local Disk (C:). If you simply click YES every time, every software program will install on your primary drive. The more drive space you utilize, the slower your computer will be.

What should you do?

It's not too late to change! Back up any data you need, then uninstall those software and re-install them onto other disk partitions like D:, E: or F:. Not installing any programs onto Disk C except internal system programs will greatly improve the overall speed of your system.


Habit #2. Close system tray programs

When you install certain software, they will automatically set to launch during startup. So when you boot your PC and start Windows, they will also launch run in the background. These applications also impact and degrade your system speed.

Pay attention to the system tray or the notification area, single click your mouse right button on the applications' icons, click Close to release resources for your PC.


Habit #3. Minimize the startup programs

Why should we do this?

After you download a software and install it, most of them default to start up when your computer boots. While this may be convenient, every coin has two sides, so it will also impact your PC's speed as well. More startup programs result in a slower computer.

How to cancel the startup programs?

Ideally, make a habit of unchecking any start up options during the installation process.

For programs already installed, follow the steps below to modify the startup:

• Press Window + R on your keyboard (this works for all Windows versions) to bring up the Run prompt.

• Type msconfig into the space and click OK or simply hit the Enter button to proceed.

• A system configuration window will appear, click the Startup tab → Open Task Manager to access Task Manager interface. All the startup programs are listed here with the status and startup impact.

• Manually select the programs you want to prevent from starting up and click Disable to change the setting.


Habit #4. Keep less items on desktop

Why

The desktop is a part of system, which means all the icons and items you save on the desktop are also save on the Local Disk (C:) as well. We have already discussed this in the first section, so we will not restate the issue here.

Two useful tips here:

1. Delete as many icons and shortcuts as possible to minimize system slowdown. You can move them into a single desktop folder – this not only means they occupy less desktop space but facilitates faster access as well.

2. Save files onto other disks, and create desktop shortcuts for them if you always access them.

• On explorer, highlight the file folder or program.

• Right click on it.

• Choose Send toDesktop (create shortcut) and click on it.

• The corresponding program or file folder icon will show on the desktop as a shortcut.


Habit #5. Close excessively large processes

Large processes will hog your PC's CPU or memory. Learn to shut them down to easily speed up your computer.

• Hover your mouse over the taskbar and right click on it.

• Choose the Task Manager program.

• Click the Processes tab – and click the CPU column header to sort the processes starting with the largest one.

• Highlight each process individually and click End task to close them.


Habit #6. Clean your computer regularly

In the same way, you cannot drive fast through a narrow crowded road, your computer will also suffer if the system is congested. So regularly clean your computer as a habit, and remove junk files and empty the cache regularly – this, without doubt, will help to make your computer run faster.

How to clean effectively?

To do this, you will require a handy tool to assist you.

• If you have already got one, that's great. Use it to check and clean your PC at least once every week. However don't simply clean and remove trash items, also update your system.

• For beginners, installing a reliable computer management software will be easier; simply schedule the cleaning operation to run automatically.

Type "PC management software" into the Google search bar, to view a list of recommendations.

Choose one → download → install it (not on C: disk) → launch it → then optimize your computer. It's that easy!


Habit #7. Scan for malware and viruses regularly

Malicious software and viruses can be another unfortunate cause of PC slowdown. They can try to sneak into your PC when you install compromised software.

You can also use PC management software to scan for viruses and malware, as most also feature antivirus functions.

Just click and run the PC checkup function, it will automatically scan for malicious programs, processes, malware, and viruses. Once found, you can choose to uninstall or delete them.

Develop your very own PC checkup routine and turn it into a powerful habit.


Habit #8. Maintain your PC hardware

Naturally, a brand new PC operates much quicker than an older one. But if you take good care of your computer and maintain it well, age makes little difference. Tech pros will often remove dust from their PC air outlet, clean the screen and computer surface, wipe the keyboard, etc. to keep it looking and performing great.

Does this actually affect the PC performance?

Sure! Removing dust improves airflow which in turn assists with heat dissipation; that is closely connected with overall performance. Please treat your PC well!

While a regular, even daily, optimization routine is important, the PC quality, configuration, and performance are vital as well.
