Acetone Vapor - A great way to make your 3D-printed models look smooth and awesome

Some times, your 3D-printed models may have some visible defects due to the operating errors, improper printing settings and other external factors. That will make your print models look ugly and roughly. But don’t throw them away, as there are still some ways to make them sleek and cool. Acetone is an organic compound that can be used as a powerful dissolving agent. Thanks to this feature, it can dissolve the common 3D printing materials - ABS filament. Together with the steam method, it can effectively remove defects on the surface of the printed models.

Safety tip: Acetone can be volatile at room temperature, so it should be put far away from the fire during the using process, and you’d better wear gloves and do keep the indoor space ventilated.

However, the Acetone Vapor cannot well smooth the 3d-printed models if the ABS filaments are mixed with impurities. So to guarantee the smooth effect, you’d better buy ABS filaments through regular channels.     

How to smooth 3D-printed models with Acetone Vapor

Step 1. Prepare a tray and a base to place the 3D-printed model.

Step 2. Take out a piece of absorbent paper and fold it into a ring. Then use a hard card board to hold the ring paper and put it in a glass cup.

Step 3. Prepare some Acetone (You can easily buy Acetone in drugstore and it is cheap) and pour a small amount of it into the cup along with the cup wall. Then rotating the glass cup to make the ring paper fully wet.

Step 4. Turn the glass cup upside down and put it over the 3D-printed model. Then pour some water into the tray.  

Step 5. Observe the surface changes of your 3D-printed model and remove the glass cup when the surface is well dissolved. Wait for about 10 minutes to let the 3D-printed model dry up.
