Avoid OLED TV burn-in and set correctly

OLED screens are considered the crowning glory of display technology. They promise perfectly high contrast and brilliant colours. And they keep their promise - owners of appropriately equipped smartphones and OLED televisions are enthusiastic. The products with OLED displays also scored very well in tests conducted by COMPUTER BILD. In the course of time, however, the shiny image of the new screen technology was scratched off: the Google Pixel 2 smartphone, for example, was also equipped with an OLED display. In tests, it shone accordingly with very high contrast and natural colors. But after some time, reports of burnt-in displays increased. This means that screen contents displayed unchanged over longer periods of time remain schematically recognizable even after a picture change. OLED televisions also have this effect. But you have to provoke it, because conventional TV programs hardly reproduce very high-contrast elements in the same place over a long period of time. Even station logos hardly burn in. However, there are precautionary measures that OLED owners should take to be on the safe side.

Remove OLED burn-in

TV manufacturers prescribe exercise therapy so that picture content does not remain on the screen for a long time. This shifts the entire picture imperceptibly and slowly by a few pixels. LG, for example, has pixel steps at intervals of around 30 seconds. As a result, a few rows of pixels are lost at the edges, but the sharpness remains fully intact - the televisions do not scale the images. Special maintenance procedures are helpful if traces have burned into the picture and have not disappeared after one hour of normal TV operation. They erase the tracks with special image sequences, the procedures can last an hour.

● LG OLED televisions: In the picture menu of LG televisions, the OLED options can be found five lines below the picture mode in the "Settings for the OLED panel". There the screen shift should be activated. The Pixel Refresher can be activated in the line above.

● Panasonic OLED TV: In the screen settings, the "Pixel Orbiter" prevents the burn-in effects, the "Screen Maintenance" deletes any traces.

● Sony Bravia: Sony calls these two options "pixel shift" and "panel update". In the user manual, Sony explicitly states that the panel update should be performed at most once a year.

● Philips OLED TV: A manually selectable pixel shift is not available with Philips, just in case the "Remove image residue" option is selected in the advanced image settings.

Prevent OLED burn-in

Further measure against burn-in effects: OLED screens should not run continuously and require regular standby phases. They use the televisions to readjust the screen control. The user is not aware of this. If there are no interim standby phases due to continuous operation or frequent disconnection from the mains (disconnected plug or switched socket), colour shifts can occur over time. OLED televisions should also not shine brighter than necessary. But you don't have to touch them with kid gloves either. It doesn't have to be the factory-set economy mode for LG televisions, for example, because it only exploits a fraction of the quality potential. This makes the OLED images look a little cloudy.
