FPV stands for "First Person View" - it refers to analog video signal sent from a video transmitter which goes to a receiver. The signal is connected to a screen or a pair of goggles.

Simply put, it's the tech that make you see what the drone sees. There are many frequencies available for FPV system. Here this guide will discuss the two most commonly used frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz.


Differences in FPV frequency

The higher the frequency, the smaller the antenna. This is because the lower the frequency band, the longer the waveform is produced.

The longer the wavelength, the better it can get around or penetrate obstacles - e.g. buildings and trees.

One thing you should also keep in mind: always check which frequencies are legal in your country. It's different from country to country!


5.8 GHz (5800 MHz)

It is the most commonly used FPV frequency by most drones because it does not require much power, is cheap, and produces good video and audio quality. It can also transmit up to 1-2 km in a large and open area with the right antennas.

Cons:

♦ Shorter range when the air is humid or when flown close to clouds

2.4 GHz (2400 MHz)

2.4 GHz is the other major frequency used by FPV equipment. 2.4 GHz has greater range than 5.8 GHz with pretty good video quality as well.

Most transmitters also use 2.4 GHz, so FPV will lead to interference. Hence you should not use a 2.4 GHz remote control with a 2.4 GHz FPV system.

Cons:

♦ Penetration ability is not very good

♦ Frequency is crowded

♦ Can't be used together with 2.4 GHz RC transmitters

What frequency should you use for FPV?

Generally speaking, 2.4 GHz is capable of passing through some obstacles and has a much better range, whereas 5.8 GHz is broader, but less crowded.

To choose which to use frequency actually depends on different occasions.

For close-quarters flying where you do not fly further than a few hundred meters, or a kilometer at the most, 5.8GHz will be the best option.

The more range you wish to get, the lower the frequency you want to fly on. If your drone comes with no camera, you'd better use a 5.8 GHz FPV and vice versa to get a smooth flying experience.

But focusing solely on frequency, the most popular and cheapest choice is using 5.8 GHz for FPV and 2.4 GHz for remote control because it will definitely be legal and the cost will be affordable for most pilots.
