Extreme survival: choose the best camping knife for you

A good camping knife is essential for many tasks. Choose the best one for your own specific needs.

Why it matters?

By its very design, a camping knife fulfills many roles and niches. This covers everything from small chores, such as slicing fruit or vegetable in half, and cutting rope down, to hard chores such as cutting wood, cutting through bone, and in some cases, defending oneself.

Choice matters however what’s available on the market can be bewildering. When you begin scanning various types of knife and their features on our website, you can get lost and end up with a knife that doesn’t suit your needs.

So we’ve created this handy guide with different features that should be taken into account when selecting your knife.

1. Fixed or Folding

In general, hard-use tasks like cutting wood and hunting are more easily done with a fixed blade design, while light-duty tasks (e.g. food handling and cutting rope) can be handled with a folding blade design.

But what if you require all-round functionality –general purpose cutting, piercing, tweaking, and slicing?

Although most of these tasks can be achieved with a single fixed or folding blade (with differing results), a multi-tool knife offers a variety of options that can handle specific cutting jobs much more efficiently.

multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife usually features multiple blades, as well as useful tools such as screwdrivers, corkscrew, bottle opener, scissors, saw, and much more.

2. Blade Length

Blade length is one of the most important aspects to consider if you intend to carry your knife as part of your EDC kit.

Although a matter of preference, many countries, and states, have their own regulations regarding the legal length of a blade that you're allowed to carry on your person.

Generally, a length of under 10cm/3.9 inches is allowed.
A small blade of under 5cm/2 inches in length is more convenient for everyday carry. This kind of knife is also suitable for most utility tasks, including cutting boxes, food handling and cutting rope.

A medium blade is between 2-3.9 inches in length. With the added weight, this is great for a wide range of cutting tasks and more strenuous jobs.

3. Blade Material

Stainless steel:

● Features 12% (or more) chromium content
● Provides excellent rust resistance with high edge retention
● Better suited in conditions where your blade may get wet
● Stainless steel is easier to sharpen, but that also means it dulls easier
● Stainless steel is absolutely the best choice for camping

Ceramic blade

● Harder to sharpen and not easy to dull compared to stainless steel
● It is more resistant to rust and retains the edge longer
● Ceramic is not as susceptible to staining and corrosion as stainless steel
● More suitable for cutting fruit and vegetable

Other considerations

Of course, there are many other factors to be considered here. For instance, blade edge type, opening style, locking mechanism, handle material and so on.

Suffice it to say, selecting a good camping knife is challenging, but if you know what you are going to do with it and what to look for, you can wade through the sea of junk that is out there and find some real gems.
