How to automatically turn on the computer on a schedule?

By  Oleg Romanenko 2019-03-14 38666 2

The idea of setting up a computer so that it automatically turns on at a specified time comes to mind of many people. Some people want to use their PC as an alarm clock in this way, others need to start downloading torrents at the most profitable time according to the tariff plan, others want to schedule the installation of updates, virus scan or other similar tasks. What ways you can fulfill these desires will be discussed further.

There are several ways in which you can configure your computer to automatically turn on. This can be done using the tools available in the computer's hardware, methods provided for in the operating system, or special programs from third-party manufacturers. Let us examine the standart methods in more detail.

Method 1: BIOS and UEFI

The existence of the BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) was heard, probably, by everyone who is at least a little familiar with the principles of computer operation. It is responsible for testing and properly turning on all the components of the PC hardware, and then transfers them to the operating system.

The BIOS contains many different settings, among which there is the possibility of turning on the computer in automatic mode. Let us make a reservation at once that this function is present in far from all BIOSes, but only in its more or less modern versions.

To schedule the launch of your PC on the machine through the BIOS

● Enter the BIOS settings menu Setup. To do this, immediately after turning on the power, you must press the Delete or F2 key (depending on the manufacturer and version of BIOS). There may be other options. Usually the system shows how to enter the BIOS immediately after turning on the PC.

● Go to the "Power Management Setup" section. If there is no such section, then in this version of BIOS, the option to turn on your computer on the machine is not provided. In some versions of BIOS, this section is not in the main menu, but in the form of a subsection in "Advanced BIOS Features" or "ACPI Configuration" and called a little differently, but its essence is always the same - there are computer power settings.

Power Management Setup

● Find the item "Power-On by Alarm" in the "Power Management Setup" section and set it to "Enabled". This will allow the automatic turning on of the PC.

Power-On by Alarm

● Set the schedule to turn on the computer. Immediately after the previous item, the settings of "Day of Month Alarm" and "Time Alarm" will become available. With their help, you can customize the date of the month for which the automatic start of the computer and its time will be scheduled. The "Everyday" parameter in the "Day of Month Alarm" item means that this procedure will be launched daily at a specified time. Setting this field to any number from 1 to 31 means that the computer will turn on at a certain number and time. If you do not periodically change these parameters, then this operation will be performed once a month on the specified date.

At present, the BIOS interface is considered outdated. In modern computers, UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) has replaced it. Its main purpose is the same as that of the BIOS, but the possibilities are much wider. The user is much easier to work with UEFI due to the mouse support .

Setting up the computer to automatically turn on using UEFI

● Login to UEFI the same way as in BIOS.

● In the UEFI Main Window, go to the advanced mode by pressing the F7 key or clicking the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.

● In the window that opens go to the APM section.

● In the new window, activate the mode "Power On By RTC".

● In the new lines that appear, configure the schedule for automatically turning on the computer.  Special attention should be paid to the "RTC Alarm Date" parameter. Setting it to zero will mean turning on the computer every day at a specified time. Setting a different value in the 1-31 range implies inclusion on a specific date, just as it does in BIOS. Setting the start time is intuitive and requires no further explanation.

● Save your settings and exit UEFI.

Setting auto power on using BIOS or UEFI is the only way that allows you to perform this operation on a completely turned off computer. In all other cases, it is not about switching on, but about bringing the PC out of hibernation.

Method 2: Task Scheduler

You can configure the computer to automatically turn on using the Windows system tools. To do this, use the Task Scheduler. Consider how this is done on the example of Windows 7.

At the beginning, you need to allow the system to automatically turn on / off the computer. To do this, open the "System and Security" section in the control panel and in the "Power Supply" section, click on the link "Change when the computer sleeps".

Change when the computer sleeps

Then in the window that opens, click on the link "Change advanced power settings".

Change advanced power settings

After that, find in the list of advanced parameters "Sleep" and set the resolution for wake-up timers to "Enable".

 Enable wake-up timers

Now you can customize the schedule to automatically turn on the computer. To do this, do the following:

● Open the scheduler. The easiest way to do this is through the Start menu, where there is a special field for searching programs and files.

To open the scheduler, just click on it with the left mouse button. It can also be launched via the Start menu - Standard - System Tools, or through the Run window (Win + R), by entering the taskschd.msc command there.

● In the scheduler window go to the "Task Scheduler Library".

● In the right part of the window, select "Create task".

Task Scheduler Library

● Create a name and description for the new task, for example, "Automatically turn on the computer". In the same window, you can configure the parameters with which the computer will wake up: the user under which the system will be logged in, and the level of its rights.

● Click the "Triggers" tab and click on the "New" button. Set the frequency and time for automatically turning on the computer, for example, daily at 11:42 am.

Click the Triggers tab and click on the New button

● Go to the "Actions" tab and create a new action by analogy with the previous item. Here you can configure what should happen when performing a task. Let's make it so that at the same time some message is displayed on the screen. If you wish, you can configure another action, for example, playing an audio file, launching a torrent or another program.

Go to the “Actions” tab and create a new action

● Go to the "Conditions" tab and check the box "Wake the computer to perform the task." If necessary, put the remaining marks. This item is key in creating our task.

Wake the computer to perform the task

● Complete the process by clicking on the "OK" button. If the general parameters were specified to login to a specific user, the scheduler will ask you to specify his name and password.

This completes the setting for automatically turning on the computer using the scheduler.
