What is Navic?
As we have just mentioned, the Navic is the abbreviation form of Navigation with Indian Constellation. It’s an indigenous navigation system developed by India and is supposed to become the alternative of Indian GPS. It will be available for civilian use in the first half of this year.
What are the advantages of the Navic?
The Navic can provide location data within 10 meters of accuracy, which is said to much better than the 20-30 meters accuracy offered by GPS. In addition, it covers the Indian landmass and area of almost 1500km around it, so local Indians can enjoy more accurate positioning than GPS, especially for the navigation under complicated area.
Which phones support Navic?
As the Navic is newly announced, so there are very few smartphones support Navic. Presently, it has been already confirmed that the smartphones powered by Snapdragon 460, Snapdragon 662 and Snapdragon 720G offer onboard Navic support. In addition, the Snapdragon 865 and 765 also have the Navic tracking unit, but the Navic service hasn’t been enabled yet. So if you want to buy a phone with Navic compatibility, make sure it carries one of these chipsets.
All these chips mentioned above support dual-frequency - L1 (1.58 GHz) and L5 (1.17 GHz) - Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The Navic works on L5 band S-band (2.5GHz). However, some other chips like Huawei Kirin 990, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus also support dual-frequency GNSS, but it’s not clear at the moment if phone makers can update the firmware to enable the Navic support.
If you want to know the specific smartphone name that support the Navic. Yes, here is. The Realme X50 Pro is one of the first phone to come with Navic support. But if you want to wait for a few months, there will be more phones work with Navic, they include iQOO 3, Realme 6, Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro, etc.
How to check Navic support on your smartphone?
Want to know if your existing smartphone supports Navic? It’s an easy thing. Just follow the steps below:
Step 1. Download and install GPSTest or GNSSTest App on your Android smartphone. You can install both of them and verify the satellites separately to be sure about the Navic support.
Step 2. After finishing the installation, open the app and tap on “Start Test”. Then the app will start detecting all the navigation satellites available at your location. It the app detects Indian satellites, it means your phone support Navic navigation. For better test, you’d better go outdoors to let the app detect the satellites.
So that’s all from us. We believe that more and more smartphones will come with Navic support and offer Indian users more accurate and convenient navigation service.
