With unlimited minutes and free long distance phone plans, most mobile phone plans today do not charge extra for domestic phone calls. This is usually not true when you need to call someone in a foreign country.

Fortunately, there are ways to make free international calls to almost every country in the world to connect with family, friends and business customers.

Our world gets smaller and smaller by the day. A few years ago, it was a novelty to call someone in a foreign country. Thanks to technology, it is almost common for certain companies and families who have relatives in another country.

If you've ever travelled abroad, you might benefit from one of these applications as well. With free hotspots, you can send text messages or browse the web for free. Now, you can make a call without paying exorbitant fees, assuming your phone works outside the U.S..

How to make free international calls

Free international calls are possible due to VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology. If you hear a podcast in which the host is interviewing a guest from abroad, it is more likely that he or she will communicate via VOIP.

Teaching English online to international students also uses VOIP technology. Although we can mainly use the Internet for email, streaming our favorite TV shows and maybe even a mess online, international calls are another modern wonder.

Many of these applications work with your smartphone or computer, so you can make free video and video only calls from any Internet-connected device.

1. Viber

Viber is one of the most popular applications for free international calls. All you need to do is choose the person from your Viber contact list and click on "Free Call". Or, you can also open the Viber app and choose the person you want to call or chat with for free too.

2. WhatsApp

Another commonly used application is WhatsApp, owned by Facebook. You can make voice or video calls and send SMS messages to anyone with the app.

WhatsApp also allows you to send documents up to 100 MB in size, which can make it a perfect application for business too. In fact, there is even a WhatsApp for Business platform that helps businesses connect easily with their customers.

3. FaceTime

If you're connecting to another Apple user, you can use the built-in FaceTime app. You'll need a Wi-Fi connection to make the call, but audio and video calls are free. FaceTime only works between two Apple devices and is incompatible with all non-Apple devices.

4. Skype

Skype is a free application for Android, Apple and Windows devices. If you need to send text messages or call a mobile or landline, you'll have to pay a monthly fee, so in a nutshell, international calls from Skype to Skype are free, but Skype for traditional phones costs money.

5. Rivet

What makes Rebtel cool is that you can make free international calls to more than 53 countries without data or Wi-Fi connection. The Rebtel uses local numbers to complete the call to other Rebtel users.

If the person you are calling does not live in one of these supported countries, you need to connect to Wi-Fi or a minimum 3G data connection.

6. IMO

Many VOIP applications require a 3G cellular connection or using a Wi-Fi network. IMOs support international calls where only a 2G connection is available. Even if you have 4G LTE everywhere, other countries only thank you for the internet.

If security is a primary concern, IMO voice and video calls are encrypted. The application supports even encrypted calls to up to six participants. How's that for a party line?

7. PopTox

We know you can make free international calls when you call another app user. PopTox makes it possible to call a regular or fixed cell phone for free! The recipient of the call does not need the PopTox application for you to make the free phone call.

You can call from your computer or PopTox mobile app and only need an internet connection. Although PopTox offers free phone calls, there is a limit to how many calls you can make per day. For unlimited calls, you can pay every minute after reaching your daily limit.

8. LINE

LINE allows you to make free international calls for up to five minutes to virtually any phone number in the world. The recipient of the call is not required to have the LINE application. Your toll-free call may take up to five minutes after watching a brief announcement.

In addition to supporting international phone calls, the LINE app also lets you share text messages, photos, videos and stickers with your friends within the app. If you're looking for an application that works as a social media platform, LINE is a great choice.

You can also use LINE to read the news and get special coupons too.

9. Vonage Mobile

Vonage was a pioneer of the original VOIP movement and they still offer international calls to residential and business landlines. Vonage Mobile is your free application that lets you make voice and video calls to other Vonage Mobile users. You can also share video messages for free when you don't want to make a phone call.

This application is available for Android and Apple phones and tablets with 3G+ or wifi internet connection.

10. Tango

You do not need to know how to dance to use the Tango , but can make the application more fun. In addition to voice and video calling, you can play with others or use a digital mask.

Currently, Tango supports free international calls to any number in the following countries:

United States

Canada

Mexico

India

You can all other international destinations for a nominal rate that can still be cheaper than your current mobile provider.

11. VoipBuster

VoipBuster offers free PC to PC calls and calls from international mobile applications. This application does not support video calls or text messages and is for basic communication only. For voice only calls, VoipBuster can be a good option.

12. VoipStunt

The same company that owns VoipBuster also owns VoipStunt, but these two applications serve different countries. If one app does not offer free calls to the country of your choice, see if the other apps do.

VoipStunt allows you to make free phone calls in the application on your phone or computer to other VoipStunt users. These online calls can be unlimited in duration, which is also very beneficial. This application does not support text messages or video messages, so it is a negative quality if you need a more extensive application.

13. Voxofon

While you were still thinking you'd never buy a smartphone, Voxofon was one of the first apps to offer free international calls in 2008. Now that smartphones are common, he says a lot that Voxofon is still out there and is relevant today! Plus, they're still offering free calls.

The Voxofon application works on any mobile device or computer and calls between users of the application are free. You can also send text messages, photos and videos for free. Voxofon also offers the option of calling international mobile phones and landlines as well.

14. WeChat

Do you need to make a call to China? You might consider WeChat, which is one of the most popular applications in China and acts as a social media platform. To put WeChat's popularity into perspective, Facebook is the most popular social media network in most of the world. However, WeChat is arguably more popular in China.

WeChat offers free international calls and group video calls. Can be downloaded to your Android, Apple or computer devices.

15. Google Voice

Google Voice is the most limited application on this list because you can only make free calls between the US and Canada. If you are well with this, you may like this application because it is powered by Google. You can even get a free phone number so you don't have to share your current mobile phone number.

16. Phone.com

When you need a more robust connection for international business calls, consider Phone.com. This is a paid service, but you enjoy the following advantages:

Free number 1-800

Voice to email

Fax to email

Call routing

Self-service

Hold music

HD Conference

SMS / Text Messages

You won't have many of these options with a free international calling application. The small investment can be worthwhile if you are serious about building relationships with international clients.
