How to save your contacts by changing your smartphone?

By  Daniel Camilo 2019-06-05 300 0

When changing smartphones or moving from iOS to Android, we are always afraid of losing contacts during the operation. However, it is time for everyone to use the cloud to automatically synchronize contacts between all their devices.

To avoid losing the phone number of the person you were supposed to call back within a week when you change smartphones, it's time to put away their notebook where their contact numbers were recorded and switch to Google Contacts. Whether you are running Android or iOS, the method remains just as simple.

Sync your contacts with Google

On Android

In principle, all your contacts are automatically synchronized with your Google Account. To force synchronization of your contacts with your account, go to your phone's Settings, Accounts > Google and select your main Gmail address. Click on the three small dots at the top right of the screen to display the menu allowing you to Synchronize your account.

Let's check that all our contacts have been recorded. To do this, connect to the Google Contacts site with your main Gmail account and compare the list displayed on the site with your contacts on your smartphone. It's possible that some of them are missing.

If this is the case, check on the contact sheet to see if they are Google contacts and not phone contacts, since the latter are not stored by the American giant, but only in your smartphone's memory.

If the contacts are properly Google stamped, synchronize again and wait a little while. Otherwise, in the settings of your contact application, the Export option will allow you to create a VCF file (vCard).

Then, you will be able to import as a CSV or vCard file on Google Contacts, in the Plus section of its side menu.

After importing, many duplicates will certainly appear in your contact list. Don't panic, Google should offer you to delete them. If this is not the case, the Duplicates option is available in its side menu.

On iOS

In your iPhone Settings, go to the "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" menu where you can add your Google Account. When asked what you want to synchronize, be sure to select the contacts. The contacts on your iPhone should automatically synchronize with Google Contacts. There is no way to track the progress of the synchronization, so be patient.

If this option does not work, it is also possible to export contacts manually with iCloud or iTunes. In the first case, you will have to go to the Contacts page of the icloud.com website, from where you can export all your contacts or a selection using the wheel icon at the bottom left of the screen in vCard format. In the second case, select your iPhone in iTunes and you can synchronize your contacts with Google Contacts from the information tab.

For the method using iCloud, all you have to do is follow the method explained above to import your contacts to Google Contacts with the recovered vCard file.

The reflexes to have when creating a new contact

As we saw above, when you create a contact, you should take care to save it as a Google contact and not on the phone itself. Indeed, in the second case the contact is only stored in the smartphone's internal memory - or the SIM in some cases - and will not be synchronized between all your devices.

Fortunately, Google seems to have bypassed this problem by no longer even offering internal memory recording in the latest versions of its Contacts application. However, depending on your smartphone, it might as well still be present, so always check this each time you add contacts.

Builders applications

Some smartphone manufacturers offer their own contact backup system in the cloud. This is the case of Huawei or Samsung who will often offer you to save your contacts on their solutions and not Google's.

To backup, simply choose to synchronize your contacts from your Google Account or simply download the Google Contacts application to your smartphone!
