How to turn your tablet or Android smartphone into a PC or Mac screen? Here are 3 easy ways for you

A tablet is a screen, isn't it? So why not use it as a second screen for your PC or Mac? In this tutorial, we present you the solutions available to achieve this.

The idea is not to duplicate your screen, as a VNC solution could do. No, the idea is to use an Android device as a second PC screen, and therefore to extend the display of your laptop. This can be practical in different cases: on the move, the tablet can extend the display of the laptop computer, for those who have opted for a widescreen and want a second auxiliary screen.

Spacedesk: the free Windows compatible application

Spacedesk is in beta test and is free. Nevertheless, its use has limitations. Indeed, you must put both your devices (your Android device and your PC) on the same local network, which induces latency in use. Nevertheless, its installation is very simple.

You install the application on your Android terminal (tablet or smartphone), you plug it into WiFi, you install the drivers on PCs that must be on the same local network. Once your PC is restarted, simply launch the application - everything is automatically recognized. You can then change in the Windows settings your different configurations, such as screen definition.

However, there are three things to remember. First of all, touch didn't work for me. Secondly, the application is only compatible with Windows. Finally, wireless connection forces latency to occur during use, especially if devices on your local network are active.

iDisplay: the paid application compatible with macOS and wired

iDisplay works in a slightly different way: it can work simply with a Lightning cable (for iOS), micro USB or USB-C. This avoids using a local area network, much better for extending the display of your laptop when travelling (in a hotel room for example). Note that the application is also compatible with macOS.

Like Spacedesk, you must also install the drivers on PC or Mac, not to mention the application on your Android device (or your iPad, it also works). Note that the whole system also works in WiFi, but to eliminate latency you will have to use a cable. You have a choice. I also noticed that the touch screen works, which is quite useful on Windows.

The application is not free: take advantage of the Google Play trial to validate compatibility with your Android device. On my NVIDIA Shield Android tablet, it works perfectly.

Sidecar: use the iPad natively as a second screen of a mac

With the release of iOS 13, iPadOS and macOS Catalina, a new feature has been added natively to the Apple ecosystem. Called Sidecar, it simply allows you to use your iPad as a second screen for your Mac computer, without any pre-requisite installation.

Highlight: this feature can be used wirelessly, for better portability, as well as with a wired connection, for better performance. We will update this tutorial when the functionality is deployed in a stable way on Apple devices.
