How to use GoPro as an IP Cam?
Let's start by saying that your GoPro really has a thousand resources, even if maybe you haven't discovered it yet. So let's step by step and try to figure out how to turn it into a real wireless webcam, relying on the connection at home.
How to change your GoPro settings?
As you may have discovered, if you fiddle a little with your GoPro, there are plenty of ways to use it, scrolling through all the menu items.
To turn your action cam into an IP camera, however, there is no preset mode that can be selected directly from the menu! If there had been, in fact, we would have had no reason to write this guide, don't you think?
However, in order for your GoPro to turn into a wireless cam, the first thing you need to do is turn on both your PC and your action cam and, if you have a Hero 4 down version, press the black button with the wifi symbol, located on the left side of your GoPro, until the light stops flashing.
At this point, with the power button, you will enter the settings menu (represented by the wrench), confirm with the shutter release button and then press the power button repeatedly until you reach the item "Wireless Controls".
Once you have selected this option, simply select "GoPro App" and wait for the connection to be activated correctly.
If you are the proud owner of a GoPro Hero 5 or later, simply open the settings menu, select "Connections" and scroll down to "Wireless Connections".
Once you've made that choice, you don't have to wait for any more screens, just tap on this setting and your GoPro will automatically activate its wifi connection.
How to view GoPro images on your PC?
Was setting up your GoPro easy? Very well, because this step will be a bit more complicated, but it will allow you to understand how to use GoPro as an IP cam in all circumstances.
The procedure we are going to see is applicable for all types of operating systems, whether they are Windows, MacOs or even Linux.
All you have to do is select the wireless connection icon and open its menu with all the connections. At this point, you will have to choose the one of your GoPro, which usually starts with GP or contains the word "Hero", so you can't go wrong.
Enter the connection password, which we recommend you set up yourself, and the computer will automatically connect your GoPro to your PC.
In case you want to stream live images, we recommend using a PC connected to the internet via Ethernet LAN cable, otherwise, occupying the wireless connection for your GoPro, you will remain without a connection to the network.
Once the connection is established, open a web browser and type in the address 10.5.5.9:8080, which will allow you to access the FTP area of your action cam. Here you will find folders, in which there will also be videos that you have saved in the memory of your GoPro.
Select the "live" folder, in which, once opened, you will find a series of video files that, to understand how to use GoPro as an IP Cam, do not interest us. You will have to double click on the file "amba.m3u8" and wait for it to open.
You will be directed to a white screen full of codes preceded by hashtags: what interests you, however, is the address that will appear at the top of the bar, which should be 10.5.5.9:8080/live/amba.m3u8.
Copy this address and open your video player for GoPro: if you still don't know which one to choose, we recommend VLC Media Player for Windows and QuickTime Player for MacOs.
If you use the first one, just select the "Media" item from the menu bar, then choose the "Open network stream" option and enter the copied address into the "Enter a network URL" space.
If you are in a Mac environment, once you open QuickTime, select "File", then "Open location". Enter the address in the "Movie location" pop-up window and then click "Open".
In both cases, however, the result will be the same: you can see your GoPro images directly on your computer screen and you can also use them for your live streaming.
It probably sounds like a complicated procedure, but in reality it's very simple to do, just follow our directions step by step and you're done! Once you've learned how to use GoPro as an IP cam, you won't have any limits and you'll be able to enjoy your recordings and live streaming.
