Human beings are not human beans but smartphones are always smart

I still remember (with misty-eyed nostalgia) those heady days when mobile phones were used to make phone calls and send/receive short messages. Limited functions, virtually no software to install, and satisfyingly mediocre entertainment possibilities.
Nowadays, just 10 years after the launch of the industry-changing iPhone, the extended functions of modern smartphones are paired with incredible power, ever larger touchscreens and uncountable apps. Truth be told, the functionality and performance are converging toward those of computers - many functions previously only available to computers are now accessible on smartphones.
In short, a smartphone is a mobile phone (or cell phone) with an advanced mobile operating system (OS) combining the traditional features of a personal computer OS with other dedicated features tailored for mobile or handheld use.
You may think, "Well, thank you, but I still don't know what exactly a smartphone is."
My reply? "Well, it's OK, we all know we are human beings, but what exactly is a human being, maybe we are just human beans?"
If you're not familiar with the phrase "human beans", go and search for the recent film, The BFG, from acclaimed director, Steven Spielberg.
Five Main Characteristics of Smartphones
1. Wireless Access to Internet (GSM, GPRS, CDMA...)
Smartphones are all about wireless connectivity, with the ability to access the Internet. In other words, they should support GPRS, CDMA 1X or 3G (WCDMA, CDMA-EVDO, TD-SCDMA) networks, and even further, i.e. 4G (HSPA +, and FDD- LTE).
Take the Xiaomi Redmi 4 for example, it supports the following network types: GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, FDD-LTE, TD-LTE, etc. This matters because it becomes possible – right out of the box – to use the Redmi 4 in different countries with different carriers or providers.
2. More PDA Functions on Smartphones
The classic PDA functions are primarily geared toward productivity, including PIM (personal information management), calendar notes, task scheduling, multimedia applications, webpage browsing, etc.
We can find that the HUAWEI Mate 8 supports a vast array of similar functionality: Alarm, Bluetooth, Browser, Calendar, Fingerprint recognition, Fingerprint Unlocking, FM radio, etc. A modern smartphone is more like a companion who accompanies you on your daily life. The friend is smart, trustworthy, and helpful.
3. An Open Operating System for Smartphone (Android 6.0 & iOS 10)
With an open OS, a vital platform for applications is possible, extending the boundaries of smart phone functionality even further.
An example is the Android 6.0 OS on the acclaimed OnePlus 3. With it, you can install many third-party applications. The superb combination of 6GB RAM and 64GB storage opens up the possibilities and choice for installing all the games and apps that you desire.
4. The Pursuit of Humanization
The continual trend toward humanization via technology has allowed manufacturers to translate our individual needs to smartphones functions. This empowerment allows us to take an essentially human approach in our interaction with this mobile technology.
One way to express this is being able to arrange the shortcuts vertically or horizontally as needed on the Elephone P9000. What's more, this phone model has sensors for gestures, gravity, proximity, as well as built-in GPS functionality for navigation.
5. Powerful Compatibility
The increasing demands from customers has relentlessly driven not only hardware development but also the need for compatibility with third-party software.
For instance, the popular XIAOMI Redmi Note 3 Pro allows you to download your favorite apps through the massive Google Play Store or any other app market. The 64-bit hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SOC makes it an incredibly powerful and versatile smart phone, ensuring you can multitask and run multiple applications at the same time.
