Apple TV can be a great device that lets you enjoy your favorite TV platforms, listen to podcasts, and even play video games. However, little or nothing can be done without the remote, as it is essential to be able to operate it completely through the tvOS interface. That's why in this post we show you what to do when the Apple TV doesn't recognize the controller or it doesn't work properly.

Why doesn't Apple TV recognize the remote?

Siri Remote is the name given to the latest generation of Apple TV's controller and, as we said, it is essential to be able to perform all the actions on the device. Whether it's entering an app, advancing the timeline of a movie, invoking Siri or managing the volume if you have a headset connected. So it's clear that the incorrect operation of this is a major problem, but don't worry because maybe the solution is easier than you think.

The first thing you need to know is if there really is an alternative for this controller, and the key is in our iPhone. By downloading the Remote app we can have an interactive controller with similar functions to the Siri Remote. This can help us to get out of the way, or who knows if definitely. However, we can try to find out what is wrong with the remote and how we can fix it.

On the other hand, we find the old Apple TV controls, which are white or aluminum colored, unlike the last generation black. They are powered by a CR 2032 button cell, so the main reason they stop working is precisely because the cell cell has run out. You can change the battery to check it, and if despite changing it still does not work you can find another possible solution throughout this post.

Taking up again the case of the latest generation Siri Remote, we can find that one cause of it stopping working is due to its battery being empty. As a general rule, this remote lasts quite a long time with charge, sometimes even years depending on the use. However, as with any electronic device, it needs to be charged when the battery runs out. We therefore recommend that you connect it via Lightning to the mains and leave it charging for several minutes. Then disconnect it and try using it. If it still doesn't work, you can rule out this possibility, since with a minimum battery it should already work.

There is also a possibility that for some reason the controller has become unlinked to the receiver, so Apple itself recommends following the tips below.

Re-linking a Siri Remote to Apple TV

Step 1. With the Siri Remote charging via Lightning, you must aim at the Apple TV from a distance of approximately 8 centimeters.

Step 2. Press and hold the Menu and Volume Up buttons for five seconds. You may be prompted at this point to place the remote on top of your Apple TV to complete the link.

Step 3. Disconnect the Siri Remote from power and wait approximately 5-6 seconds before reconnecting it to power.

Step 4. Point the remote approximately 8 cm from the Apple TV. Then press and hold the Menu and Volume Up buttons on the remote for five seconds. If prompted, place the Remote on top of your Apple TV to complete the link.

Step 5. Unplug Apple TV from the wall outlet. Wait at least six seconds, then plug it back in.

Re-attaching a classic controller to Apple TV

Step 1. Make sure no objects come between the remote and the front of your Apple TV.

Step 2. Unlink the Apple TV Remote by pressing the Menu and Left buttons on it for 6 seconds.

Step 3. Look for the unlink icon above another icon on the remote.

Step 4. Try linking the remote back to Apple TV by pressing and holding the Menu and Right buttons for 6 seconds.

Step 5. Look for a link icon again on top of a controller icon.

Step 6. Now disconnect your Apple TV from the power and wait about 6 seconds to reconnect it and check to see if the remote is working.

Once you have tried these solutions, you should have the remote control working again. If it doesn't work, it could be a problem with the Apple TV's signal receiver, although this is quite rare. In any case, you'll need to visit an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Center for a free replacement if the controller is under warranty and undamaged. If the warranty has expired, you'll need to buy a new controller. In the case of the classic controller, you'll find it for $25, while the Siri Remote costs $65.
