Keep your Notebook cool in 3 easy steps

Why is cooling a laptop so important these days? While there have been significant improvements in thermal design, component quality, and user environment, cooling remains an important issue.

The cooling system is the result of extensive research and development work of product designers. A good design should dissipate heat effectively to ensure a good thermal profile that does not impact usability (excessively hot areas of the keyboard or chassis) or damage onboard components. This often relies on optimized airflow, correct fan settings, good quality components, and even hardware throttling.

Why is cooling a laptop so important these days?

While there have been significant improvements in thermal design, component quality, and user environment, cooling remains an important issue. Thermal design and component quality relate to the heat sink and internal notebook architecture and design, all of which impact the cooling performance. While the immediate environment refers to potential problems, such as dust, airflow, etc.

How to improve heat dissipation/cool down your laptop

Of course, with only a few exceptions, many of these factors are at stock settings when the notebook comes out of its box. Despite that, there are some steps we can take to manually improve heat dissipation more efficiently and effectively. We summarize some of the easier hacks to help you say bye to high laptop temperatures.

1. Set up supports to improve airflow

Increased height almost always translates to lower temperatures because of (a) enhanced airflow and (b) because of distance from the heat radiation source.

Although most laptops tend to have holes and/or padded feet at the bottom to provide some elevation and air circulation for heat dissipation, height is generally given less prominence.

But you don't need to head to the Himalayas to properly cool your notebook. Do it yourself with some quick and supports on the bottom, and improve the air flow capacity.

◆ The easiest way is to use stackable small post-it note pads

◆ Buy a notebook cooler pad

◆ Do not set the supports too high

◆ Note: never play your laptop on a bed as that kills the airflow completely

2. Use external ventilation

If the temperature of the palm rest and the keyboard is high, set a small fan (small fan) around the notebook. Try not to use a USB connected fan.

However, another problem occurs: while the fan can blow away a lot of heat, it can also bring water, dust, or other debris into the keyboard at the same time. This can accumulate and negatively affect the heat dissipation. People can offset this with a good quality keyboard cover (keyboard cover) that is dust-proof and water-resistant.

3. Improve the power management

What are the main heat sources from the notebook itself? There are the processor, video card, memory, and mechanical hard drive. These will all generate heat provided there is power (from the battery or A/C). CPU development has led to include energy-saving features for reducing power consumption and heat.

A software solution is also possible. Specifically, Windows, Linux, OS X, and other OS are equipped with power management functions. We recommend installing the latest drivers, and adjusting the power management correctly, including sleep/wake, to reduce power consumption and heat.

Wrap up: along with the easy to apply tips, you should periodically clean the dust from fans and vents. If the notebook is still within its warranty period, consider contacting their customer support for dedicated after-sales service.
