Nintendo Switch: How to transfer your backups to a new console
By Town Kassis 2019-09-13 1705 0
Nintendo now offers several Switch models on the market. There are the two "classic" models, the one with a better autonomy and the old historical model which are difficult to differentiate, and the new Switch Lite, smaller with integrated controllers. Many people are therefore interested in changing consoles and upgrading to a more recent version. Problem, how to make sure you don't lose your valuable backups stored on the old model?
User-to-user transfer
Nintendo does not currently allow you to transfer all storage from one Switch to another Switch. Instead, the firm offers a user-to-user transfer system. The advantage is that it allows users to separate between several devices, switching from a family switch to one switch per user, in other words. Also note that Nintendo's transfer tool will not copy the captured images and videos to the Switch.
Prerequisites
Before you start, here's what you need to follow this guide. For both Nintendo Switches, you need to:
● Software update 4.0 or higher
● The same Wi-Fi network
● Put them in charge
In addition to this, the new Switch must have enough space, and not be connected to a Nintendo account. If it is a new console, this should not be a problem.
Procedure to follow
Step 1: Access the user transfer menu
On the old Nintendo Switch, access the system's main menu ("home" button on the right Joy-Con) and then choose "system settings" ("star wheel" icon). In the console settings, choose the "Users" section and then "Transfer a user".
Step 2: Choose the user to transfer
The tool starts by giving you information, click on "continue" twice, then choose "Source console". The console will then check if it is connected and connected to a Wi-Fi network, then draw up a list of users. All that remains is to select the user to transfer, check his information and choose "continue" to start the transfer on the source console.
Step 3: Prepare the new Switch
On the new Switch, named "target" by Nintendo, go back to the user transfer options (step 1), press "continued" twice, then choose "target console". The system then asks you to log in with the Nintendo account associated with that user, which is a mandatory step to be able to start the transfer.
Step 4: Start the transfer
Back on the old Switch, choose "Transfer" to start the Wi-Fi copy of the backups. Once the operation is complete, you can start again for other users to transfer.
Note that the transferred account will no longer be present on the source console after transfer: it is not a copy, but a move of your data.
