Two types of in-car systems | Android Auto and CarPlay

By  Steve Lowry 2018-08-08 4897 0

Both Apple and Google have now announced their own in-car smart platforms: CarPlay and Android Auto, and the two competitors will be smashing another fight in a new field.

Android Auto

Android Auto is a smartphone projection standard developed by Google to allow mobile devices running the Android operating system (Version 5.0 Lollipop and above) to be operated in automobiles through the dashboard's head unit. Android Auto was announced on June 26, 2014, in a keynote address at the opening session of Google I/O.

Android Auto can integrate several functions with Android devices:

● Google Now: Personal wisdom assistant

● GPS map: Satellite positioning and voice navigation

● Music control: Access music by using Google Play or other music applications like Pandora, Spotify, etc.

● Voice manipulation

CarPlay

CarPlay is an in-car system from Apple Inc. that seamlessly integrates users' iOS devices, iOS experience and dashboard systems.

Carplay system

CarPlay only supports iPhones with Lightning interface, and although the iPad already supports this interface, Apple does not list the iPad as a hardware device supported by CarPlay.

There are three main ways to control CarPlay:

● Siri: You can communicate with the car through Siri, tell the car what to do next, and you can hear the system receiving the information received on the phone and reply in the form of voice dictation.

● Touchscreen display: Some CarPlay-enabled cars will be equipped with a touchscreen display that can be turned on or off on a fairly simple home screen.

● Physical buttons: The car has physical buttons that are one of the ways to control CarPlay, and controls such as volume control and track changes are seamlessly integrated.

In design, Google's Android Auto interface uses the latest material design style, looks very simple and smooth. CarPlay's design seems very simple, but the functionality is almost identical to its native platform. However, testers personally believe that Android Auto is superior in interface control and fluency.

CarPlay and Android Auto apps are not installed directly in the operating system, but are projected from the user's mobile device. If you have an app with compatibility, you can see it on your system's home screen.

All in all, the experience of the two platforms is very similar, but the difference is also very obvious. There may be some compromises and sacrifices depending on the needs of the user.
