What is a radio receiver?

By  Jilleen Rozario 2020-01-08 1029 31

In radio terminology, a receiver is an electronic device that receives and demodulates radio signals from an antenna, which is mainly used for sound, image positioning information and so on. Radios, televisions, satellite TV receivers, pagers, GPS and so on, which are used in people's daily life, are all radio receivers.

Generally speaking, a radio receiver often refers to a radio (as opposed to a radio receiver, and radar signal receivers also fall into this category), which refers to an electronic circuit that consists of a tuning device, a preamplifier and a power amplifier in a box. Some old receivers have speakers. This is a common device in high-fidelity or home theater systems, but some music enthusiasts believe that a separate tuner can provide higher quality expression and sound effects.

The receiver is usually at the core of a sophisticated home theater system that provides optional audio input to a variety of playback devices, such as record players, CD players, and cassette players; video devices (i.e. cassette recorders, DVD players, video game players, and televisions). Modern receivers tend to eliminate record players and cassette players, while providing digital signal processors to make the sound as real as in a concert hall. Nowadays, digital audio S/PDIF interface has become very popular.

Some modern receivers can send audio on seven loudspeakers and an additional subwoofer, as well as headphone jacks to facilitate the use of headphones. Receivers that support stereo or surround sound vary widely in price, and receivers with a high-quality unit are sometimes quite cheap-- less than $200 or less in the United States.

In China, because of fierce competition, some manufacturers produce receivers that cost less than $10, including digital decoding units, dual-channel headphones and AAA battery packs. Because modern receivers are purely electronic devices, unlike mechanical and electrical devices (such as mechanical turntables or cassette playback machines), they do not contain moving parts, and they can provide fault-free services for many years. As the integration of home theater systems has become common, it is usually integrated with DVD players and surround sound. Users can simply connect it to televisions, other devices and loudspeakers.

The self-powered radio has a built-in hand generator that can be used in developing countries or as emergency / disaster relief equipment.
