What is SDHC card?

By  Nikolaos Bigby 2020-01-18 1360 28

SDHC card is an acronym for "Secure Digital High Capacity", that is, "high capacity SD memory card". In May 2006, the SD Association issued the system specification of SD 2.0, which stipulates that SDHC is an SD card with a capacity greater than 2GB and less than or equal to 32GB, which conforms to the specification.

 Features

The biggest feature of SDHC is high capacity (2GB-32GB). In addition, the SD Association stipulates that SDHC must use the FAT32 file system, because the FAT16 file system previously used in SD cards supports a maximum capacity of 2GB, which does not meet the requirements of SDHC.

As the successor of SD card, the main feature of SDHC is that the file format has been upgraded from FAT12 and FAT16 to FAT32, and the highest support for 32GB. At the same time, the transmission speed is redefined as Class2, Class4, Class6 and other levels, and the high-speed SD card can support the real-time storage of high-resolution video recording.

SDHC card is the same as that of the current SD card, and the copyright protection function is the same as before, but due to the change of the file system, there is an incompatibility between the SD devices that only supported FAT12/16 format in the past, but now it also supports FAT32 (SDHC) machines, which can read the existing SD cards in FAT12/16 format.

All SD cards with a capacity greater than 2G must comply with the SDHC specification, which states that the SDHC must at least meet the speed level of Class 2, and there must be an SDHC logo and a speed grade mark on the card.

Device identification and compatibility

SDHC still follows the backward compatibility principle of SD card.

Because SDHC uses a different addressing method from the SD1.1 specification, it is not compatible with older versions of SD devices produced before the establishment of the SD2.0 specification, and only SD devices that meet the SD2.0 specification and higher specifications can use SDHC. If the SDHC is plugged into an older version of the SD device, it will not be recognized by such devices for the purpose of protecting the data in the card.

How can we confirm that the device is compatible with SDHC? generally, there will be a more obvious SDHC logo on the device, or the compatible SDHC will be indicated in the product specification.
