What is the color saturation

By  Moshe Tarrant 2020-01-04 1050 15

Saturation (Saturation) is one of the constituent elements of color, and it is also an item that photographers attach great importance to.

The so-called saturation actually refers to the purity of the color, the higher the purity, the brighter the performance, the lower the purity, and the darker the performance. In English, Saturation and Chroma are talking about the same thing.

Traditional well-known color systems, such as Munsell, DIN in Germany, Nature Color in Sweden, OSA in the United States, cosmos in Japan. When they classify and summarize the color system, they are mostly based on the three attributes of color-amp;mdash;- hue, saturation and brightness.

The color saturation (Color Gamut), of liquid crystal is also known as liquid crystal opening ratio (Aperture Ratio). It represents the bright degree of the color of liquid crystal display and is a very important parameter of liquid crystal products.

The color saturation is based on the color range of the three primary colors of the display as the numerator, and the color range of the three primary colors specified by NTSC as the denominator to calculate the percentage. If a monitor has a color saturation of & amp;ldquo;72%NTSC, it means that the monitor can display a color range of 72% of the range specified by NTSC.

Because each pixel of liquid crystal is composed of red, green and blue (RGB) sub-pixels, the backlight is combined by RGB pixels to form arbitrary color light after passing through liquid crystal molecules. The brighter the three primary colors of the RGB, the wider the range of colors that the monitor can represent. If the three primary colors of the monitor are not bright, then the display can display a narrow range of colors because it cannot display more vivid colors than the three primary colors. The way to improve color saturation is to improve the brightness of backlight and the transmittance of liquid crystal, which requires higher technology and cost of manufacturers. Different liquid crystal displays on the market are of different grades, and their bright degree is also very different. At present, the highest standard is 72%NTSC.
