Xiaomi gateway - the nerve centre of the sub-device network
As a general rule, Gateways have a 2.4 GHz WiFi connection to connect to the network and be able to interact with us and the rest of the devices in the Mi Home ecosystem. Among its functions stand out:
● It is the control unit and buzzer of the alarm.
● It has a courtesy light and to indicate different states.
● Alarm clock function.
● Bell function.
Many users do not know how many Gateway models we have available. That's why today we're going to try to clarify these doubts and see the differences between them.
Mi Hub Control - Gateway Version 1 - DGNWG01LM
It was the first gateway model to reach the MiJia environment. It's aesthetically the same as version 2. But Xiaomi gateway doesn't have a radio and it has the MI logo in the center.
It is incompatible with the second generation ZigBee sub-devices since a different protocol was used for its communication. It is discontinued.
Mi Hub Control - Gateway Version 2 - DGNWG02LM
It is the most used and the one we recommend as a Gateway. It maintains the aesthetics of the first model and compatibility with first generation sensors.
Also with silkscreens with the MI logo and with all ZigBee devices launched so far.
Xiaomi gateway incorporates Internet radio although it is not very usable outside of China.
Aqara Hub ZHWG11LM
Initially, it was presented as a Homekit-compatible Gateway that would also work only in the Aqara app and only compatible with Aqara's ZigBee line of devices.
But with the passing of the months, it became fully compatible with Mi Home. Making compatible with Apple Homekit all devices controlled by this Gateway from My Home.
Compatibility was also added in the Aqara Home app to the ZigBee Mijia devices. This allows the user to choose where to use their devices without any problem.
If you have purchased one of these Gateways you should know that in order to use it in My Home you must have the gateway updated to firmware 1.4.7 or higher.
The Aqara Gateway can support up to 32 sub-devices, compared to the 64 that the Xiaomi V2 Gateway can support.
Additionally, it lacks the Internet radio function and some ZigBee devices such as these are not yet listed:
● Vima lock
● Ikea Tradfri light bulbs.
This added to a slightly higher price than the Gateway V2 makes it less recommended unless compatibility with the Apple HomeKit is sought.
Aqara A/C Companion - KTBL01LM
It performs the functions of gateway and controller of an individual Split air conditioning unit by using an infrared emitter to control the unit and measuring the air conditioning consumption through the built-in socket.
Since it is designed for high power devices it uses a different connector from the standard, it is 3 AU type plugs wider and thicker designed to support 16 amps.
It has the same functions as the Gateway V2 with the exception that it renounces the LED lighting ring in exchange for incorporating the infrared emitter.
Aqara A/C Companion Updated Version - KTBL11LM
It is an update of the Aqara A/C Companion - KTBL01LM. It adds the functions of supply cut-off, overvoltage protection, overheating protection and consumption saving.
It also maintains all the functions of the previous model. With the introduction of the smart socket function the Aqara will allow us to connect devices up to 3500 watts.
On the other hand, the smart plug function will allow us to operate in 4 different modes. Air conditioning connected to the plug, unattended mode of air conditioning (ie without connecting to the plug), electric water IR and smart socket of 16 Amps.
Currently the only devices that are not listed are Ikea Tradfri bulbs.
Aqara Air Conditiones Controller (Hub Version) - KTBL02LM
Special edition made for Xiaomi on the occasion of the launch of these new gateways.
It maintains the same characteristics and construction materials as the Aqara A/C Companion but takes a round shape more in line with the design line of the Mijia range.
Aqara Camera Hub- ZNSXJ11LM
1080P camera with 180 degrees of field of view that makes the functions of Gateway ZigBee. It is a particular device by mixing both functions, camera and gateway in one.
The only devices that are not listed to link are:
● Aqara curtain
● Ikea Tradfri bulbs.
Note: Although some devices are not listed it is possible to use them using the option "Other Devices". Because we haven't been able to test it we can't ensure full compatibility with all ZigBee devices currently compatible with Mi Home.
ZigBee communication protocol
The Gateway uses a JN5169 wireless microcontroller (ZigBee) with 512 kB flash and 32 kB of RAM based on the ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 (HA 1.2) protocol.
It has a transmitting power of 10 mW, which provides communication at a distance of 15 meters indoors.
It also guarantees several years of operation of battery devices, hence it is necessary to reduce the radiation power to 10 mW. Therefore, the transmitter power is the same for all radio systems: 10 mW.
The sensitivity range of 2.4 GHz does not exceed 100 dBm. For JN5169 (ZigBee), it is 96 dBm.
ZigBee devices have one of the lowest power transmitters, but a very sensitive receiver.
This combination provides a positive effect, as it has a much lower degree of exposure of people in the area of the ZigBee network. Therefore, ZigBee can be considered one of the safest and most environmentally friendly wireless standards today.
From ZigBee to Bluetooth
The Bluetooth Gateway is a functionality which has been provided to those devices that have WiFi and Bluetooth. Which allows access to Bluetooth devices remotely.
None of the Gateways we have seen so far has this functionality. So in order to use the Bluetooth Gateway must have one of the following devices:
● Mijia 1080P Camera
● Yeelight Ceiling Light
● Yeelight Voice Assistant
● Philips LED Ceiling Light
