ACER SWIFT 3 review: graphic card, design, display, price

By  Adeline Belluz 2019-05-23 581 0

The Acer Swift 3 SF314 is a multimedia notebook with an ultrabook body and a refined design. A team that does not come to surprise like the Acer Swift 5, but that is an excellent alternative if you are looking for a laptop to play sporadically and take on a trip. And is that among its most outstanding features is the presence of a dedicated graphics card NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of dedicated memory. We also enjoy an internal memory of up to 512 GB in SSD format (the configuration we have tested) along with a second slot to insert an optional disk. And all with a fairly complete set of connections, with 3 USB 3.0 ports and a port type C. I had the opportunity to mess with this laptop for a few days.

ACER SWIFT 3

A graphic card dedicated to give something more than an ultrabook to use

Without a doubt, it is one of the most interesting aspects of the Swift 3. It is not a gaming laptop like the Nitro (let alone the Predator). But its graphics card gives us a performance bonus in games and will allow us to run most of the current titles without forcing their graphic possibilities. The GPU in question is the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of dedicated memory. This graphic set is combined with an eighth generation Intel Core processor. We have tested the notebook with the Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core chip. Each core has a speed of 1.6 GHz, which can be raised to 3.4 GHz.

The RAM goes up to 8 GB, a figure that seems more than enough for a typical use of the laptop if you are not going to load many applications at the same time or use very heavy processes.

As for the internal memory, in our case we have been able to test the configuration that bets on an SSD memory of 512 GB. Keep in mind that there are different configurations with hard disk, SSD or combining the two. And is that the Acer Swift 3 incorporates a second slot to introduce another 2.5-inch disk. You can also expand the available space through the SD card reader or through an external hard drive.

ACER SWIFT 3 design

Elegant and functional design

The Acer Swift 3 is a laptop that bets for a quite sober aspect, which does not stand out but that fulfills its purpose well. Its housing is aluminum, so it will be quite resistant. Our unit has a nice silver color with a brushed effect (with horizontal stripes) that gives it a distinguished touch. Another of the points we like about this design is that brushed aluminum in silver is also maintained in the area of the keyboard, compared to other models that separate this area and is less integrated.

The corners are rounded and have been coated with a thin line of shiny silver. An attractive and elegant detail that looks great. The space that remains for the palm of the hands is quite broad, the same as its trackpad. We also have a fingerprint reader just below the keyboard on the right side. It is a feature that we see increasingly in a greater number of laptops.

The hinge travels almost all the space of the front and helps to keep the screen always firm in any position. Speaking of position, despite not being a laptop with rotating screen this can be opened 180 degrees. Personally, it is a detail that I appreciate very much because I usually use the laptop on my legs and in the car and many times I have to open it almost to leave the screen horizontal to work more comfortably.

Probably the biggest but of the design of the Acer Swift 3 is its weight. It is what you have to bet on elements such as more slots for internal discs and dedicated graphics cards. His 1.5 kilos of weight are not much exaggerated, but it is far from the feeling of lightness of bets like the Acer Swift 5 (without going any further). Neither is especially fine, as it has a thickness of just over 1.8 centimeters.

Returning to the keyboard, I liked the general layout of your keys and the typing experience. They are well separated and the height, although a little low, is sufficient. It has been easy for me to get hold of him except for one detail, which is common to other Acer keyboards. The tendency to place the on / off button where the delete button would normally be. This has caused that more than once it has turned off the computer by mistake. Luckily, it only happens when you have pressed the key for a couple of seconds, so I have had time to backtrack in most cases. By the way, the keyboard is backlit in white (yes, with a single level of intensity).

ACER SWIFT 3 display

14 Inch display mate

The screen of the Swift 3 is 14 inches. I find it an ideal format for a laptop that you want to use at home and travel, since it is easy to transport but you also have a little more screen space than the 13 inches. Another of the successes to my understanding is that it is of the matt type. It is not as spectacular to look at as a glossy screen, but it is much appreciated when it reduces the number of reflections in the panel. The IPS technology favors wider viewing angles and has a good overall brightness level.

To enjoy multimedia content and games, we have a Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The screen has rather thin frames on the sides as well as on the upper part, although the lower frame is somewhat thicker.

ACER SWIFT 3 connectivity

Very complete connections

Within the field of connections, it must be said that Acer has maintained a good collection of connectors, something that is appreciated. And is that, for example, we can enjoy up to 3 USB 3.0 full-size ports, when the usual in the last ultrabooks is to be reduced to two. In addition, we also have a USB port of type C. This connector is destined to become the standard in a few years (it is already getting on smartphones), although there are still few peripherals with this connection in laptops.

Apart from the USB ports, we also have an HDMI port to view the contents of the laptop on a larger screen or a TV. The physical connectors are completed with an SD card reader. The only thing we have missed in the Swift is an Ethernet port to connect to the Internet through cable. Instead, we have compatibility with the WiFi AC protocol, which allows us to connect simultaneously to both the 2.4 GHz bandwidth and the 5 GHz bandwidth. This second width is less congested and is designed for greater number of connected devices.

ACER SWIFT 3 ports

Good autonomy

The field of autonomy of the Acer Swift 3 is quite careful. Its 4-cell battery has a continuous use time of up to 12 hours on paper. As usual, these theoretical times are rarely fulfilled. Using the laptop with office applications, several tabs open in the browser and video (and brightness near the maximum) I have been able to work with it an average time of between five and six hours. A figure that is not bad for a multimedia laptop.

Price and opinions

The Acer Swift 3 has a price of 900 euros and you can find it already in stores. In short, this is a laptop that wants to be on the border between ultrabooks and multimedia equipment. My impression is that he gets it with a good grade. Of course, it runs the risk of staying in the background since it does not have a design that draws special attention and its figures of weight or finesse do not surprise. One of the points that I liked the most is the inclusion of a dedicated graphics card, which will give us that extra when we face the laptop to different games. Of course, do not expect to find a gaming team like the Predators or the Nitro of the brand.
