Alfawise A8 TV Box: Rockchip 3229 + Android 8.1
One of the main selling points of the A8 is the box’s very affordable price — $30.99. But the modest price tag hides quite a bit of functionality. First, you get the powerful Rockchip 3229 with four ARM Cortex-A7 cores speeding up to 1.5GHz. The box also sports the Mali-400mp2 graphics processor.
2GB of RAM ensures fast loading and boot up, powerful decoding and a stable performance and 16GB of internal storage for having all your media and other files handy.
Another great thing about the box is its extensive connectivity. There are four USB 2.0 ports, analog AV output, HDMI 2.0 connector, SPDIF digital audio and the RJ45 network port. There is also an SD card slot letting you expand the storage with up to 32GB more.
With Android 8.1 running the show, you’ve got a familiar and intuitive interface at your disposal ensuring the easy handling of media files, documents, data forms, web pages and more.
The powerful hardware opens the doors for great video quality: the Alfawise A8 can play 4K video at 60 frames per second. Plus, you get the support of 3D, 2K and HD video playback.
On the looks side, the A8 features a rather minimalistic design with a matte plastic frame with rounded edges.
Alfawise Z1 TV Box: voice control + octa core Amlogic S912
The Alfawise Z1, though insignificantly bigger than the Alfawise A8, comes with some powerful hardware. You get the combo of the 8-core Amlogic S912 CPU with the Mali T820MP3 graphics allowing for the decoding ability of 4K at 60 frames per second.
Memory-wise, the box comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage — further expandable with 64GB on the SD card.
The Z1 does connectivity well. There are numerous ports located on the sides of the box including the high-speed USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, a card reader, AV, RJ45 LAN port and 5V / 2A DC port. The USB 3.0 alone is an important addition as it helps significantly increase the transfer data (up to ten times) and is the perfect gateway for large media files like HD movies.
Things are a bit "less new" on the software side — the Z1 comes with the Android 7.1.2. Then again, you get a faster connection with 2.4G + 5.8G dual-band WiFi and easy support of external hardware with Bluetooth 4.1. The H.265 decoding is also an effective step up from the H.264 saving up to 50% of bandwidth.
One of the main upgrades on the Z1 is the addition of voice control on the box’s remote. So if you are looking for the smart handsfree experience, you will definitely appreciate the option.
Design-wise, the Z1 is not that much different from the A8. You get the same matte plastic body with a bit of gloss on the sides, rounded edges and a generally very subtle look that would go well with any interior.
Alfawise A8 TV Box vs. Alfawise Z1 TV Box: the verdict
So, which box do you go for? The Alfawise A8, as mentioned above, is a great deal on price and functionality. You get a fast, 4K capable media box with Android 8.1 at your fingertips. The Alfawise Z1 , on the other hand, throws in the fun of voice control, as well as a powerful processor. But then there is the price difference. While the A8 is less than a dollar over $30, the Z1 comes with a rather hefty price tag of $79.99. But for many, the ability to get even closer to the movie theatre experience at home may be well worth the price.
