Alfawise Y1 smart phone watch: design

The Alfawise Y1 is something in between a sports tracker, a sports watch and a phone. However, at the first glance, it looks pretty much like your standard wrist watch. The Y1 comes with a circular 1.54 inch IPS display and there are three digital watch faces to choose from, all of which will show time, date and additional information like step counter and battery status. The case is made of aluminum and the watch is secured on your wrist with a simple yet sturdy TPU strap. There are several colors to choose from: black, white, blue and pink.

Now, let's do a quick run through the features. And we have to preface this by saying that we wouldn't be expecting too much from the $13 watch. But there are actually quite a few things to mention.

First, the watch comes with a SIM card slot and supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 quad-band calling. This means that the watch can actually act like a mini phone: you will be able to receive phone calls and messages independent from your smartphone.

Bluetooth 3.0. Despite of being a phone on its very own, the watch also communicate with your smartphone via Bluetooth 3.0 for additional functionality like syncing contacts and messages. Bluetooth 3.0 is not the latest standard by far (most smart watches these days use Bluetooth 5.0 for communication), but, then again, you have to factor in the price.

Thanks to the Bluetooth connection, the watch can also work as a remote camera trigger as well as an anti-lost device for your phone - both features comes on the Alfawise Y1.

You can also use the watch for music as both an independent MP3 player or a Bluetooth music device. You will also be able to easily control your music playback right from the watch: skip through tracks, adjust the volume, etc. The phone comes with 32MB RAM and 32MB ROM and there is an SD card support of up to 32GB. The watch runs on the MTK2502D processor.

Bluetooth music device

We are used to smart watches being sports watches and expect the smart wrist gadgets to come with advanced fitness tracking. And the Alfawise Y1 can comes with several lifestyle features as well. You will be able to make full use of the basic fitness tracking functionality like a pedometer, calories counter, sedentary reminder (preventing you from spending too much time behind the desk) and a sleep monitor (keeping an eye on your sleep and giving you feedback as to how many hours of deep and shallow sleep you've had throughout the night). Naturally, there is no built in heart rate sensor or specifier sports modes on the watch - understandable for the price.

sleep monitor

The watch comes with a decent battery of 280mAh battery making for up to 62 hours on standby.  This is not the best on the market, but not the worst either and you should be able to use the watch fully for at least a couple of days before a recharge will be needed.

Alfawise Y1 smart phone watch: the verdict

When we think of a $13.27 price tag, we don't typically think we'd have much to write about.  But the Alfawise Y1 has quite a bit to offer: you can make and receive calls with this watch, keep track of your workouts, monitor your sleep, sync your calendar events and more.

True, there is no advanced functionality like a heart rate monitor or a better version of Bluetooth on board, but, in our view, you do get the most out of the price with the Alfawise Y1.
