AMD Radeon RX 5000: Navi has a name and a new architecture, goodbye GCN

The information is not yet many on Navi, but two important elements have arrived from the conference: the release date of the first Radeon 5000 video cards and the arrival of a new architecture that replaces the current GCN.
A whole new GPU
In recent weeks uncertainty prevailed about the architecture used by Navi. Many hypothesized a simple evolution of the GCN seen so far, fearing the worst. The Radeon VII, the first 7 nm GPU ever built, uses a Vega chip based on GCN architecture. The final result, although appreciable in terms of power and versatility of use, has brought high consumption, thus penalizing efficiency.
Lisa Su, announced the Radeon RX 5000, has dispelled any doubts: the Navi chips are based on RDNA architecture, which to what has emerged so far is completely new. This is extremely positive news, because it confirms that AMD has started a new course with Navi, which will bring more power and efficiency from the first data that emerged.
Compared to GCN, AMD announced an increase in power of 1.25x with the same clock and 1.50x with the same watts for the new RDNA. Put simply, Navi guarantees better performance than Vega at the same clock and consumes less energy: if the tests confirm it, AMD has eliminated the main limits seen with Vega, an excellent premise both for the PC market, which could finally have valid alternatives to NVIDIA in the mid and high end, both for the new consoles, which will be able to count on a more efficient architecture.
The Radeon RX 5000 are also the first GPUs to use the PCIex 4.0 standard, introduced with the newly announced Ryzen X570 platform, and can therefore take advantage of the greater bandwidth available. During the event a demo was also shown that compared a Radeon RX 5000 with an RTX 2070, but not knowing the model used and its price you cannot yet make sensible comparisons. But is it really a definitive farewell to the GCN architecture? Lisa Su said that new GPUs based on it will arrive, probably at the low end of the market, but they are still to be discovered.
What is certain is that AMD has managed to increase even more the interest in Navi and the RDNA architecture, which promises to expand the choice of PC gamers and increases the potential of next-generation consoles. At this point all that remains is to wait for the arrival of new cards on the market, scheduled for July.
