AMD Ryzen 3400G specs, features and price

By  Zim Watson 2019-06-11 1299 0

With the Ryzen 3000G alias Picasso for the AM4 socket, AMD increases the clock rate and soldered the metal lid of the top model for lower temperatures. The 3400G chip is also nominally cheaper than its predecessor.

AMD has announced the Ryzen 3000G alias Picasso for desktop PCs, until now the processors with integrated graphics unit were only available for notebooks. The Picasso, more precisely the Ryzen 5 3400G and the Ryzen 3 3200G, follow the previous Raven Ridge like the Ryzen 5 2400G (test). Again, the chips are designed for the AM4 socket, so after a firmware update, all previous boards with 300/400 FCH should be able to cope with the newcomers.

As usual, Picasso is basically a quad core with Zen architecture and an integrated Vega graphics unit with up to eleven compute units, i.e. 704 shader cores. However, because AMD has the processors produced by Globalfoundries using the 12LP instead of the 14LPP method, the frequencies increase: The 3400G runs at 3.7 GHz to 4.2 GHz instead of 3.6 GHz to 3.9 GHz and the Vega 11 can now produce up to 1.4 GHz instead of 1.25 GHz.

Also new: AMD now delivers the Ryzen 5 3400G with the Wraith Spire (95W) instead of the Wraith Stealth (65W), so the boxed cooler is more powerful. In addition, the manufacturer has decided to solder the chip to the heatspreader instead of using thermal paste between the processor and the metal cover - this should further reduce the temperature. This has not been a problem so far, but the higher frequencies could require higher voltages.

In terms of price, AMD is pricing the Ryzen 5 3400G at 150 US dollars before tax, the Ryzen 3 3200G at 100 US dollars. According to the list, at least one predecessor - the 2400G - costs a little more at 170 US dollars; in Germany it is currently just under 120 euros. The two Picasso processors should be available from 7 July 2019.
