Apple iOS 13: Faster, slimmer - but no update for iPhone 6 and 5S
By Ingrid Wilhelmina 2019-06-04 928 0
With iOS 12, Apple did a rare feat: The new operating system allowed some older iPhone to run faster and even install on the iPhone 5S from 2013. With iOS 13, Apple wants to continue on the path to more stability and speed, and with iPadOS it even wants to introduce its own OS for iPads.
Apple iOS 13: Faster and slimmer
The best news for users: iOS 13 should make existing iPhones faster. Face ID should work 30 percent faster. And thanks to new packaging, app downloads should require 50 percent less data volume and simple updates 60 percent less. Even more important: According to Apple, apps should start twice as fast.
Apple iOS 13: Dark Mode Saves Power
iOS 13 now optionally offers the "Dark Mode", popular with some users, as you can already see on Mac computers: Since macOS 10.14 (Mojave) all elements like the Finder appear in dark mode with white font on black background - instead of black font on gray or white as before. On iPhone X, XS and XS Max, however, dark mode makes much more sense than on the Mac: The OLED technology used there doesn't consume any power to display black areas, so depending on the app, the battery life could be extended.
iOS 13: More order in your mailbox
The mail app of iOS 13 will help to keep track in the future: The program will automatically sort incoming digital mail into categories such as "travel" and "shopping". There will be a corresponding to-do section for mail still to be processed. Similar functions are known from the GMail or Outlook app. Also messages of arbitrary contacts are to be locked and folders to be administered more easily to let.
iOS 13: Memory cards and USB pens
Like the iPadOS, iOS 13 can finally access external storage media such as SD cards or USB pens, provided you have an appropriate adapter or Apple may equip a future model such as the iPhone 11 with a USB-C port such as the iPad Pro models.
iOS 13: Memoji
For more fun when communicating with other iPhone users via iMessage as well as via email or even supported third-party apps, fun profile pictures that Apple users have linked to their iMessage profile are provided. Unlike the animoji introduced with iPhone X, these memoji work on all iOS devices with an A9 processor or higher, but are not animated on older devices.
iOS 13: New wipe keyboard Quickpath
Other apps and Android phones have been offering an alternative to hectic typing on the virtual keyboard for years: Wipe. In iOS 13, the native Apple keyboard now also offers typing by quickly wiping from letter to letter. With this technique called Quickpath, the built-in dictionary recognizes which word has to be written, so that you don't have to hit all letters exactly to write the desired word. It is unclear for which languages Quickpath will be available.
iOS 13 relies on data protection
Many apps use the location. Until now, iPhone users could decide whether the app could never read the location, always, or only when actively using it. With iOS 13, you now have even more control: You can give apps only one time access to the location and specify that they have to ask you again next time to retrieve the location. You can also have the location questions of apps closely monitored in the background.
Sign In With Apple: Privacy Control
If you log on to all sorts of websites with your Google or Facebook account, you will often share a vast amount of personal data with these services. Apple's solution: Login with the new service Sign In With Apple. The special feature is that services or websites can also use it to request information about the user from Apple. But the user can decide for himself whether and which information he wants to pass on. Apple has even thought about the possibility of passing on a false e-mail address.
Apple HomeKit: Video surveillance without the cloud
A new function for HomeKit allows security evaluation of video surveillance. The function "HomeKit Secure Video" runs directly on routers from Linksys and Eero. Video recordings from cameras are analyzed directly from the router instead of in the cloud.
iOS 13: Shoot videos on the iPhone
Often missed: Video recordings can finally be turned in the orientation afterwards, for example if a video was accidentally turned over. There are also new functions for photo management in the Photos app, such as automatic sorting by day, month or year and selection by person. Duplicate photos are automatically recognized and can be deleted, as can the automated cleaning of the photo collection from screenshots or unimportant shots such as sales slips. Enlarging by spreading the fingers now also works in the overview, so that all photos appear magnified side by side at the same time. The photo app also plays videos and live photos while scrolling through the overview without having to open the video itself.
iOS 13: Portrait camera with more light effects
The camera app now offers an extended portrait function for close-ups with depth-of-field blur. You can play more with the virtual lights, position them closer or further away from the subject like in a real photo studio.
iOS 13: More Power for Airpods and Siri
Siri has been improved in several details. For example, reading aloud texts in the WWDC demo was much more natural, with more natural emphasis and speech speed. Practical in combination with Airpods: Siri automatically reads incoming messages via paired headphones. And: You can answer immediately by voice. This also works with third-party apps that use the SiriKit function in iOS. The shortcut app introduced with iOS 12 has been extended. Siri suggests specific shortcuts on the basis of usage habits. Other apps should also benefit from the new features: In the future, developers will be able to integrate additional features for the language assistant into their apps. According to the report, the control of media content (streaming services such as Netflix et cetera) and voice calls can be integrated into applications. In the future, users will also be able to order tickets or obtain information on seats in aircraft via the assistant in apps - provided that the app manufacturer in question makes use of iOS 13's capabilities.
iOS 13 Audio Sharing: Listening to music together
If you like to share what you hear with others, the new audio sharing function makes it easier than ever to do so. You just have to tap the other person's iPhone while the audio is playing on your iPhone.
iOS 13: Health app records cycle
In the future, the health app will help to record, visualize and predict the menstrual cycle. An Apple Watch with Watch OS 6 can also be used to record the menstrual cycle.
Apple Maps: Better only in the USA
At the WWDC, Apple demonstrated a greatly improved variant of the Apple card app: By the end of 2019, this should be available at least in the USA, a German launch has not been announced so far. It shows significantly more details, is actually based on Apple's own cartography and photographs, which Apple itself has carried out. In addition, it should be much easier to use, and travel planning should also be simplified. A new Look-Around function is similar to Google Streetview.
Apple iOS 13: Memories and notes more extensive
Memories and notes were heavily bored out. Memories can be better organized in iOS 13 by adding times, dates or places to a bar with quick icons. You can also associate reminders with messages, so that a reminder is displayed for example for the upcoming birthday when you send a message to a certain person. The Notes app includes a new gallery view, better search, and the ability to collaborate with shared folders.
iOS 13: Apple Carplay
According to Apple, 75 percent of all new cars sold worldwide now come with CarPlay. In iOS 13, Carplay shows itself improved, shows music, cards and other functions in a new overview in a single view. In addition, there is a new calendar view and Siri control for navigation and music apps from third-party providers. Music playback has a new look.
