Apple iPhone SE: the successor expected to be iPhone XE

When we tested the iPhone SE in 2016, we were charmed by this proposal that went against all trends: ever larger screens and, for phones that wanted to offer a reduced footprint, low-cost platforms that were not very attractive. Like some Sharp models, but especially like the late Sony's "Xperia Compact" range, the iPhone SE offered features of its then flagship, the iPhone 6S, in a case taken from the iPhone 5S (with a 4-inch Retina screen).
A model left unfollowed
According to some studies, the iPhone SE was a good commercial and financial operation. Little research and development, since the design and components came from several older models. A very good margin, despite the range and a rather tight selling price. And a completely outdated competition. And a market segment to conquer. Moreover, if you look closely in the subway, you will still see iPhone SEs in the palm of their owners' (especially female) hands.
Despite this, Apple did not repeat. Or, at least, no renewal projects have reached the commercialization phase. Because many rumors have mentioned a successor, the famous iPhone SE 2. But the latter never came into being. Last September, Apple took a step into the premium segment with the iPhone XR. But can we consider the latter as a successor? No, because it is not smaller, but larger than the iPhone XS. That's not the concept.
What if a successor finally arrives?
As the years go by, we gradually abandon any hope of a return of the iPhone SE (or a spiritual successor). A little like we are also abandoning the idea of Microsoft returning to telephony with a Surface Phone. However, it seems that, as with the Redmond firm, not everything is lost. Indeed, a new leak from India claims that a small smartphone would be planned for next fall.
The information comes from the PC-Tablet website, which cites a source close to Foxconn's Indian subsidiary. Remember that Foxconn is Apple's preferred partner for iPhone manufacturing. A partner who has decided to set up in India to design mobiles. First of all, because it is cheaper. Secondly, because telephones produced in India are less taxed by the Indian government than imported telephones. Finally, because India currently has a better image than China among American politicians.
A small iPhone XS
So the source is linked to Foxconn India. And this source claims that a certain iPhone XE could be produced not by Foxconn, but by Winstron (which has also moved to India thanks to an investment from Apple). This smartphone would be equipped with a 4.8-inch OLED display with a notch to accommodate Face ID, an Apple A12 Bionic chipset (like the iPhone XS), a unique 12 megapixel photo sensor with f/1.8 lens, and an aluminum shell. The visual below comes from PC-Tablet and was created from the information collected.
We sincerely hope that this "iPhone XE" is real. First of all, because an iPhone XE would logically be cheaper than an iPhone XR. Then because there is no longer any premium smartphone so the screen size is less than 5 inches. Worse still, high-end smartphones with screen sizes under 6 inches (screens without borders, with or without notches or holes) are also becoming increasingly rare. And we are convinced that many consumers expect a manufacturer to take the risk of offering one.
