Apple MacBook Air vs. Samsung Galaxy Book S: Design
Samsung achieves the first point with the keyboard, although it had the questioned Apple Butterfly in front of him. The keys on Samsung's computer are nice, but a little noisy. But if you consider that Apple's Butterfly is so bad and that many have sued the company, it's a detail.
Apple strikes back with its largest offer of ports. Although both have two USB-Cs, the Macbook Air adds support for Thunderbolt 3. It also imposes itself on the quality of the material. It looks and feels like a premium laptop designed to last. While the Galaxy Book S is elegant, it is a bit flimsy.
We reserve an opinion on Samsung's trackpad until we test it in more detail, but it's unlikely to outperform the MacBook Air. Apple manufactures the best trackpads in the industry, in addition to the extensive gesture support offered by MacOS.
Samsung offers a 13.3-inch 1,920 x 1,080 TFT screen, which is also touchscreen. In contrast, Macbook Air is also 13.3 inches, but provides higher resolution (2.560 x 1.600) and a higher IPS panel. Although not tactile, it delivers sharper, more precise colours.
Apple MacBook Air vs. Samsung Galaxy Book S: Performance
The Galaxy Book S comes equipped with Qualcomm's eight-core Snapdragon 8cx processor. This is a very capable competitor to Intel's Core i5, but you must consider that Intel's Ice Lake chips are about to arrive.
We still don't know much about graphics. According to Qualcomm, the 8cx Adreno 680 GPU is the fastest ever, with up to twice the performance of the Snapdragon 850 processor. What's clear is that you'll get a 256GB SSD and LTE connectivity, ideal for working anywhere.
Things are clearer with MacBook Air. It has an Intel Core i5-8210Y, which attacks through single-core tasks, surpassing rivals such as Dell XPS 13 and HP Envy x2. However, in multi-core tests, he's unable to keep up. The XPS and the Huawei MateBook X Pro almost doubled the score in the Geekbench tests.
Apple offers two configuration alternatives, both with an eighth-generation Intel Core i5 dual-core 1.6GHz dual-core processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz, 8GB of memory, and Intel UHD Graphics 617. The only difference is that the base model has a 128 GB SSD, while the updated version has a 256 GB SSD.
Apple MacBook Air vs. Samsung Galaxy Book S: Portability
It is clear that Samsung is doing everything possible to make things lighter. The Galaxy Book S weighs only 2.1 pounds, noticeably lighter than the MacBook Air and its 2.75 pounds. This despite the fact that both computers have similar dimensions: 30.52 x 20.32 cm for the Samsung versus 30.41 x 21.24 cm for the Apple computer.
Samsung also made efforts in terms of battery life. He claims that the Galaxy Book S reaches an astonishing 23 hours. While the data is true, there is a catch: this figure was achieved by disabling Wi-Fi and LTE. So, it's not a real-world test.
Even so, it's likely to outperform the Macbook Air battery. According to Apple, it lasts up to 13 hours of movie playback and up to 12 hours of wireless web browsing. But we only managed to get eight hours surfing the net and 10 hours watching videos. No different than the average computer.
Conclusion: Samsung offers more
The first analysis between Galaxy Book S vs. MacBook Air is that Samsung's laptop will be a tough competitor.
Apple recently reduced the price of Macbook Air to $1,099. In return, you get a computer that's easy to move and with excellent terminations, a powerful trackpad, and Apple's ever-solid software.
But will it be enough to deal with Galaxy Book S? We won't know for sure until we've completely overhauled Samsung's equipment. By now, we know that the Galaxy Book S is lighter, has a better keyboard and costs $100 less. Even if the battery life is less than 23 hours, it will probably outperform Macbook Air. It also has LTE support and a touch screen.
Of course, we still can't say much about the performance of the Galaxy, beyond the promising suggestions we've received about the Snapdragon 8cx. But even without that background, MacBook Air has stiff competition at the front.
