"Ark OS" at the Patent Office: Huawei is fighting for Germany

By  Adeline Kuang 2019-05-31 262 0

Even though it should no longer be Google's Android license, Huawei does not seem to want to give up Europe that fast. A trademark registration at the Patent Office shows that the Chinese are also fighting for the important German market.

Following rumors that Huawei plans to respond to the loss of Google's licenses with its own operating system, documents have now emerged showing that the US Government's blacklisted company is not planning to do so for the domestic market alone , Huawei has, according to "Caschy's blog" on 24 May at the German Patent Office (DPMA) register the name for his Android alternative, it should be "Ark OS" ("Ark OS").

Whether the company pursues a concrete plan with it and the operating system is soon operational, remains open. Although Huawei has already submitted designs to the DPMA at the end of March, the associated screenshots could also show something completely different. "Winfuture" indicates that the illustrated app info the Android Green Alliance is called. This is an association of Chinese Internet companies committed to setting standards for Google Android.

Hazy chances of success

The trademark application itself only shows that Huawei does not want to give up the European market and above all Germany. Presumably, this is just a Plan B in case it does not resume collaboration with Google in the medium or long term.

Whether Huawei can succeed with an alternative operating system outside of China, however, is more than questionable. So far, no third operating system has managed to establish itself alongside Apple's iOS and Google's Android, even IT giant Microsoft failed with Windows 10 Mobile. Only Amazon is relatively successful with its own Android version for its devices and an alternative app store.

And even if the rumors are correct, according to which Huawei "Ark OS" should be ready for the market by the end of 2019, probably the next flagship Mate 30 (Pro) will be sunk without launching a Google license. Like its predecessors, it is expected to be presented in October. As it now looks, the device is the first major bankruptcy for the Chinese after a long track of success. Next year Huawei threatens to go out without ARM license the chips and further hardware shortages threaten.

Huawei has a lot to lose

In 2018, Huawei sold around 200 million smartphones worldwide, many of them in Germany. Exact numbers do not exist, but according to a Canalys statistics, the Chinese business in this country ran fantastic last year. Overall, Huawei achieved a market share of 21 percent and was able to increase compared to 2017 by as much as 146 percent. This puts the Chinese manufacturer in third place behind Samsung (34%) and Apple (28%). The fourth place was won by the Huawei subsidiary Honor with a market share of 4 percent. Also in 2019 began to be excellent for the Chinese in an overall shrinking market. The company celebrated around 59 million smartphones sold in the first quarter and again grew by almost 40 percent.
