ASUS 6Z (Zenfone 6): features, specs, launch date and price

Are you longing for a little change in view of the ever more similar smartphones? Well, some mobile phone manufacturers have attractive smartphone daughters in their hindquarters. The Asus Zenfone 6 for example.
It carries the latest top hardware and surprises with its foldable camera. "Computer Picture" takes the practical test.
Asus Zenfone 6: Oh OLED, you're missing!
The exotic from Taiwan doesn't need to hide from the established competition - the rear of the Zenfone 6 is made of noble glass, the sides are rounded like the Galaxy S10 and Huawei P30 Pro. Only the sharp-edged transition to the aluminum side frame disturbs a little, the deduction in the design B note. Too bad: A water rat is not the flagship - officially the IP certification for water resistance is missing.
From the front, the Asus looks as modern as the Elite: with 92 percent display area, there is hardly a frame left, only on the underside is a small hint of black bar left. Asus hits the nerve of the times with the 6.4-inch display, but incomprehensibly, they do without an OLED screen.
The dusty LCD delivers nice colors and good contrasts for LC ratios, but the brightness should have been higher. The sharpness of 2340x1080 pixels (Full HD Plus) is still fine, the pixel density of 403 pixels per inch (ppi) is on a par with the mobile phone's top of the range P30 Pro (398 ppi).
Monster battery and lots of power
Under the hood, however, the Zenfone 6 unfolds its full splendour: with the Snapdragon 855, the latest fastest mobile phone processor is on board. Together with 6 gigabytes of RAM, the Asus belongs to the Tempo elite - apps start without delay, games run smoothly across the screen.
A sensible step: unlike in the past, the Taiwanese have no longer littered the Android 9 interface with a confusing extra design and all kinds of additional software. The endurance of the Zenfone is impressive: with 5000 milliampere hours, the 6 Series has the largest battery in the upper class.
In fact, in the benchmark test it outdid the competition. You don't need a power bank anymore. But the smart phone also weighs 190 grams - almost two bars of chocolate. Too bad: Wireless charging is not possible.
Folding camera for panoramas
The real attraction of the Zenfone 6, however, is the rear camera: the duo of 48 and 13 megapixels delivers impressive daytime snapshots with a high level of detail and natural colors, but without shining like Pixel 3 and iPhone XS.
But the mechanics are impressive: Asus saves on the front camera - and simply folds the team by 180 degrees. Good for Selfies, but especially practical for panoramas. Instead of turning the camera as usual, the camera just slowly drives down the track. So the picture is less blurred, but still needs a fixed stand (tripod or flat surface), because the software compensates Wackler worse.
The question of the longevity of the mechanism is exciting: there is a small gap between the device and the camera that could attract dust and dirt.
Price and release date of the Asus Zenfone 6
The Asus Zenfone 6 will be released here in June 2019 in black. The Taiwanese are calling for 499 euros for the start - which is astonishingly little money for top-class conditions. So the Zenfone is an interesting alternative, especially in the coming months, when the price will drop a bit further as usual.
Conclusion: The Zenfone 6 from Asus delivers an exciting innovation in the usual smartphone variety with the fold-out camera, from which panorama shots benefit greatly. The rest of the equipment is worth 500 Euros, especially when you look at the huge display and the ultra-fast hardware, where the OLED panel is painfully missing and the screen is a bit too dark.
Strengths: top hardware with turbo processor, attractive glass design, amazingly good battery performance, huge display, innovative camera mechanics
Weaknesses: Screen slightly too dark, no wireless charging, not waterproof
Rating: good
