ASUS Prime Utopia Concept Motherboard launch date

By  Adeline Belluz 2019-05-29 491 0

The Taiwanese hardware manufacturer turns 30 and celebrates this with many new boards, including those for Ryzen 3000.

With the motherboard prototype Prime Utopia Asus deviates strongly from common ATX motherboards: The I/O ports for USB and Ethernet can be exchanged. Water cooling not only protects the high-end desktop CPU from overheating, but also the voltage converters on the board. Instead of the PCIe slots, the Prime Utopia features a 7-inch OLED touch screen that can display status information and is used to configure the fans and the BIOS. Among them are four M.2 slots for fast SSDs. The PEG slot for the graphics card has therefore moved to the rear, which is why an adapted case for the mainboard is necessary.

The Prime X299 Edition 30 for Core X processors with the LGA2066 socket will not only make it into the lab, but also into the trade. Asus released it on the occasion of the company's 30th anniversary. The equipment includes Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), two Thunderbolt 3 ports and 5 Gbit/s Ethernet from Aquantia. The display signals for Thunderbolt accept two DisplayPort inputs from the graphics card.

12 Asus mainboards for Ryzen 3000

Asus offers a wide range of AM4 boards with an X570 chipset for the Ryzen 3000 CPUs available from the beginning of July. Among the highlights is the Pro WS X570-ACE, which supports PCIe 4.0 and ECC-RAM among other things and is therefore suitable for professional users.

There are also two compact boards: The ROG Strix X570-I Gaming comes in Mini-ITX format. It works with Wi-Fi 6 and can address two 4K displays via DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 - provided it has a Ryzen chip with integrated graphics in the CPU socket. The ROG Crosshair VIII Impact in DTX format is slightly larger, but fits into many mini-ITX enclosures that accommodate dual-slot graphics cards. For space reasons, the two M.2 slots sit on a small, vertically protruding plug-in card. The total of 12 AM4 boards will not be on the market for about a month, at the same time as Ryzen 3000.
