ASUS show off Concept Motherboard Prime Utopia and Prime X299 Edition 30

By  Felicity Rosa 2019-05-29 447 0

ASUS will of course also be present at this year's Computex and has already presented a lot of X570 mainboards. From this point on, the company took the opportunity to celebrate its 30th anniversary by presenting a concept mainboard as well as the Prime X299 Edition 30, which accommodates the LGA2066 socket and has a lavish equipment.

With the Prime Utopia, ASUS introduced a concept mainboard that, however, is not intended for the end customer market, but rather is intended to answer the question of which connectors and features should be provided by future mainboards. FAN headers that officially support up to three fans per header, VRM water cooling or even PCIe connectors on the back of the PCB are planned.

On the front, as in this example, there would be space for a 7-inch touch OLED display with WLAN connection to read data such as temperatures, clock rates and fan speeds or to make fan settings. Optionally, the display can also be placed on the desk.

Another option is to provide four M.2 slots including coolers, all of which are supplied with fresh air in their own airflow. One highlight, however, is the modular I/O panel, which mainboard manufacturers have had to plan in detail for each model so far. With the modular I/O panel, the user can decide for himself which connections the motherboard should offer and adapt it to his personal preferences.

The Prime X299 Edition 30 for its anniversary

ASUS was founded on 2 April 1989 and is now 30 years old. On the occasion of this anniversary, the company launched the Prime X299 Edition 30, a birthday mainboard. It is based on the ATX format and logically received Intel's socket LGA2066 for Skylake-X (Refresh) and eight DDR4 DIMM memory banks. ASUS has left an OLED dash display directly under the CPU socket, as it can be found on some high-end mainboards.

In general, great importance was attached to good VRM cooling. In addition to large heat sinks, a fan is also included, which according to ASUS should operate temperature-controlled, even if it is not known where the temperature sensor is located. Two 8-pin EPS12V connectors were used for the CPU power supply.

For storage devices, not only eight native SATA 6GBit/s ports were used, but also a total of three M.2 M key interfaces, two of which were positioned in the usual orientation including the cooler and the third in vertical orientation. Three mechanical PCIe 3.0 x16 and two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots are used for general expansion.

Other highlights include a Wi-Fi 6 module (WLAN-ax), Thunderbolt 3.0 and 5 Gbit/s LAN. In addition, Gigabit LAN and, of course, numerous USB interfaces of the USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen1 and USB 3.2 Gen2 specifications are also on board. As a special feature, the ASUS Prime X299 Edition 30 will be delivered with an external console with camera and OLED display.

Information on price and availability is not yet available.
