Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) review: design, display, software, camera, performance

So far, the ZenFone series of Asus has flown a little under the radar. Good equipment at low prices, but the software interface was not for everyone. Now Asus dares a radical new beginning with the ZenFone 6: new design, new functions and new software.
No question, the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) proves a consistent rethinking. Especially in the design and the software, a lot has happened and that is undoubtedly the better. The Taiwanese group wants to focus on what's important to the user.
Design & Handling
A striking feature of the Asus ZenFone 6 is the new design, as Asus is following the trend for the smallest possible display margins. Remarkable is the renouncement of a curved glass. Instead, the good old 2.5D glass is used and only the back is slightly curved. The smartphone sits comfortably in the hand, but attracts very strong fingerprints on the back of the glass.
New is the Smart Key, which can be used either with the Google Assistant, or with another feature. Clever: When the camera app is open, it always acts as a trigger.
Also very unusual is the triple slot. This means that the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) does without a hybrid slot. In contrast to almost all premium-class smartphones with dual-SIM support, you do not have to decide whether you would rather use a second SIM card or rather a microSD card. In the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) you can easily do both.
That there are virtually no small smartphones with power, Asus also affirms. With 6.4 inches in the diagonal, the IPS display is definitely not one of the more manageable models on the market. The presentation is very bright, sharp and rich in contrast at the first meeting. Colors look natural and powerful, without the intensity of an AMOLED display.
As the display of the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) beats outdoors and if it has any disadvantages, will show the detailed test.
Cell phone camera
As with so many smartphones, the mobile phone camera plays an important role in the ZenFone 6 (2019). Therefore Asus has donated the smartphone a dual camera with 48 megapixel wide-angle lens and a second camera with 13 megapixels and super-wide-angle lens. On the first try, the camera responded very fast, focused quickly depending on the light intensity and otherwise left a good first impression of the Asus ZenFone 6.
How well photos actually get, of course, can only show a long test. A special feature of the Android smartphone is that selfies by the flip mechanism have the same image quality. A truly unique thing that has only Samsung with the Galaxy A80 discovered for themselves. Of course, the robustness of the mechanism is questionable, and how fast it may possibly unfold. After we had repeatedly obstructed the module when opening and closing, as well as rudely pitched it out, the engines were working as if nothing had happened.
Another important point: The module moves relatively fast as soon as the selfie mode is activated. This is achieved according to Asus, inter alia, through 13 engines instead of the usual 5 engines for such constructions.
Performance & Processor
What to say in the first Asus ZenFone 6 test of performance here, except "it all runs smoothly and without stuttering". Last but not least, the combination of Snapdragon 855 and 6GB or 8GB RAM is one of the reasons. Of course, the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) still has to hold its own under load and prolonged operation. At least when trying out fast in Valencia, where the Asus smartphone was officially launched, there was no criticism of the performance.
Software & Updates
It is very commendable that Asus now trusts in a nearly untouched Android on the ZenFone 6. At least at first glance, because it is still the ZenUI used, here in version 6. This is now limited primarily to the addition of special features and no longer on a visual all-round change. Theoretically, this makes it easier to deploy new security updates from Google. The future will tell if it's not just a matter of guesswork or if Asus can actually distribute Google's Android security patches in a timely manner.
Anyway, it can already be said that the first impressions of the software with its slim surface and small additional features turned out very positive.
Preliminary conclusion to the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019)
Asus dares to do something and improves rigorously on the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019): performance, display, processing, design and software make you feel right at first touch. The wow effect, however, the flip-camera. Not only is it high-resolution with a total of 48 megapixels, it also becomes a selfie camera in just a few seconds.
Therefore, it should be noted that the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) has been improved in the right places. Now the good first impressions only have to underpin their laurels in the right test and Asus could have a damn good smartphone in his pocket.
Only the virtually non-existent marketing could stand in the way of greater success. And possibly a lack of robustness of the camera unit.
