Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: highlights

Each of the phones we are talking about today have something interesting about them. But none are quite like the newly released Asus ZenFone 6.

The phone earns instant points over its competitors  in several categories at once: it’s the only one with an uninterrupted display, truly innovative design and an unbeatable selfie camera. All, thanks to one little feature: the phone’s motorized camera.

The Asus ZenFone 6 features a expansive 6.4-inch screen with no notches or bezels. The phone’s camera is, instead, placed on a rotating mechanism and works as both the back and front camera.

This bring us right to another highlight of the model: the ZenFone 6 comes the 48MP + 13MP dual cam that will also take photos from the front of the phone — making it one of the most impressive selfie cameras on the market.

The OnePlus 7 is not a phone we would get particularly excited about — especially, since the OnePlus 7 Pro is out there with so much to say. But the phone’s superpower lies in its simplicity: it brings a number of high-end elements to a mid-range device and complements that with a premium feel.

Until quite recently, the Xiaomi Mi 9 was the third best camera phone in the world. However, it has been outranked by the OnePlus 7 Pro and several other flagships and now sits in 7th place with 107 points. Still, cameras remain one of the Mi 9’s key selling points.

Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: designs and displays

We’ve already hinted that the Asus ZenFone 6 comes with something quite special to offer. And, in terms of design, it’s the most interesting model of the three phones we are looking at today.

The ZenFone 6 employs a rotating mechanism for its back camera placement and, this way, manages to use its rear cam as the front cam as well.

Whenever you feel like taking a selfie and reverse the lens in the camera app, the phone’s back camera will rise, rotate and snap a photo of you. This gives the phone the freedom to have a notch-less display and offer a genuine full-screen experience. On the back, there is a slight 2.5D curve on the edges and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Colorwise, the phone keeps to the classics and is available in silver and black.

While the OnePlus 7 does not sport any eye-catching innovations, it is still a very good looking phone. Its 6.41-inch display is interrupted only by a tiny teardrop notch, which, admittedly, makes the phone look slightly outdated. With that, there is an in-display fingerprint sensor and the phone’s back panel only houses the vertically-placed cameras and logo. The OnePlus 7 is only available in grey in Western markets but China and India also get the red version of the phone.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has pretty much kept the design of last year’s Mi 8 — except for the smaller notch and three cameras on the back compared to just two cameras on the Mi 8. This is the most colorful phone in our comparison available in Lavender Violet, Ocean Blue and Piano Black and featuring the trendy iridescent finish on the back. Plus, there is the limited edition Mi 8 Explorer edition with a transparent back. The phone sports a 6.39-inch Samsung AMOLED display and also comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: hardware and software

All the three phones in today’s review run on the Snapdragon 855 CPU — and it’s not really surprising as it’s currently the most in-demand processor on the market delivering strong performance for a reasonable price.

RAM and ROM combos are slightly different. The ZenFone 6 comes with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and, for storage, you can choose between 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The OnePlus 7 isa available in the 8GB + 256GB and 6GB + 128GB combos. The Mi 9 offers RAM options of 6GB or 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

All the three phones use Android-based OS with custom UIs on top. The ZenFone 6 comes with  ZenUI 6, which is the closest you will get to stock Android. The OnePlus 7 runs on Oxygen OS 9 and the Mi 9 features MIUI 10.

Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: cameras

Things always tend to get interesting when it comes to camera reviews — and today’s comparison is no exception.

We’ve already talked plenty about ZenFone’s camera design. But we have not said much about the camera’s performance. The ZenFone 6 is equipped with the Sony 48MP main image sensor — but it is designed to take 12MP photos via the process known as pixel binning (where four pixels come together to make one). There is also a 13MP ultra wide angle lens for scenery and panoramic shots.

The same camera will also take your selfies and videos on the front — and, as we’ve already mentioned, it’s one of the best selfie cam performances we’ve seen. Another thing to mention is that you will be able to manually control the camera as it moves up — and this gives you the freedom to shoot at a variety of angles.

The OnePlus 7 also comes with the 48 MP main sensor, which is paired with a 5MP depth sensor. PDAF and OIS are onboard and you get a dedicated 16MP selfie camera housed in the mini notch on the front.

 OnePlus 7 cameras

The Mi 9 is, for now, the highest ranking camera phone out of the three on DxOMark. With it, you get a triple rear camera including the 48MP main sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP telephoto lens. The Mi 9 has been complimented on its camera’s quick autofocus and a good color level and natural white balance. The rear cam performs quite well in low-light conditions while some of the reported drawbacks include a limited dynamic range.

Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: batteries

The ZenFone 6 comes out a clear winner in the battery game thanks to its huge 5000mAh battery. Asus promises that you will be able to use the phone freely for as long as two days on a single charge and 26 days on standby. There is fast charging support but no wireless charging compatibility as of yet.

The OnePlus 7 and the Mi 9 both come with much more modest batteries: 3700mAh for the OnePlus 7 and just 3300 mAh on the Mi 9. Both phones support fast charging but the Mi 9 also supports fast wireless charging — which is what we are missing on the Asus ZenFone 6.

Asus ZenFone 6 vs. OnePlus 7 vs. Xiaomi Mi 9: who wins?

We often find ourselves in limbo at the end of phone comparisons — but, this time, things to be quite clear-cut.

We love the design idea and the huge battery on the Asus ZenFone 6 — and we would love to see more devices that don’t skimp on battery and look beyond the notch for the all-screen experience.

The OnePlus 7 remains a very good mid-range phone option — but there is just nothing that special about it to get excited.

We still love the cameras on the Xiaomi Mi 9 as well as the fast wireless charging option. A bigger battery would have been a great addition — but that could be asking too much from a device that is already outstanding for the price.
