The ScreenPad 2.0
While the ScreenPad was first introduced as a second display in the trackpad at the Computex 2018 on the ZenBook Pro, it is now growing. At this year's ZenBook Pro Duo at 14 inches. The lower-priced ZenBook family had to give up the feature so far, now it finds its way into slightly improved form: Instead of the 5.5-inch ScreenPad of last year's ZenBook Pro, Asus donated a 5.65-inch touchpad to the updated product family.
Thanks to the new ScreenXpert software, many new shortcuts, keyboard macros and tools are now included. Among other things, the handwritten input of text and the presentation of a numpad is possible. Software developers can streamline apps through an API for the ScreenPad, so that, for example, when playing videos, a corresponding control can be displayed. The interface of the screenpad has generally been simplified somewhat, the hardware itself should consume less than half of the power compared to its predecessor.
Displays - size of your choice
Asus maintains the compact form factor: With a screen-to-body ratio of up to 95 percent, the notebooks are hardly larger than absolutely necessary. Depending on the model, Asus installs a 13.3, 14 or 15.6-inch display with IPS panel, 72 percent NTSC coverage and Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). Only in the largest variant is optionally also a 4K display (3,820 x 2,160 pixels) available, the specifications of which are otherwise identical to the 1080p panels.
Performance & Equipment
Asus uses the same processors in the new model as its predecessors: Regardless of the model, the buyer has the choice between an Intel Core i5-8265U and an Intel Core i7-8565U. Upgrades are available for the built-in graphics chips. In addition to the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620, the GeForce MX250 with 2 GB GDDR5 is used in the 13- and 14-inch model, the largest model is equipped with a GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q with either 2 or 4 GB GDDR5 memory.
All models are available with up to 1 TB PCIe SSD and up to 16 GB of RAM. The ZenBooks are also well connected thanks to WiFi 5 (802.11 ac) and Bluetooth 5.0. There are USB-C, USB-A and HDMI ports, the full features depending on the model is shown in the table below. Unfortunately, Thunderbolt 3 is missing, so that, for example, the use of an external graphics card is not possible.
Charging takes place via a separate power connection, which eliminates the need to connect and charge the notebooks via a docking station with just one USB-C cable. The battery should last 14 (ZenBook 13 & 14) or 17 (ZenBook 15) hours.
Prices & availability
The new ZenBooks will be available from the third quarter at prices starting at € 1,399. More detailed information about the prices of the respective models and the delivery data should follow in the next weeks.
