Computex 2019 | MediaTek Helio M70-7nm-5G SoC based on Cortex A777

Does anyone remember the MediaTek Helio X30-SoC? About 2 years ago, the Taiwanese wanted to compete with Qualcomm and Samsung - but the Deca core chip was hardly ever found in any smartphone, at least not outside China. Shortly afterwards, MediaTek took a break from the fight for high-end processors and concentrated on the Helio P series, the more profitable entry-level and mid-range segment.
But this has obviously become too boring for Qualcomm's competitor in the long run, because soon there will be a real flagship SoC from Taiwan again. The Helio M70, officially unveiled today at Computex 2019, is supposed to make up ground and will immediately focus on the future topic 5G, which will probably hit us with full force by 2020 at the latest.
After the rumour that the next Kirin 985 SoC with an integrated 5G modem will come up, MediaTek also seems to use the opportunity of the hour to make 5G reception accessible to a wider audience. The new SoC, which was first teased at the Mobile World Congress, is produced using the modern 7 nm process and already works on ARM's recently announced Cortex A77 basis, together with the new Mali G77 GPU with Valhall architecture.
This also means that high-quality camera features such as 80 megapixel support and 4K/60 video recording are no problem - AI acceleration is of course also integrated. However, the integrated 5G modem only supports the sub-6Ghz range, which should be sufficient for the first expansion stages of the 5G networks. At the end of 2019, the samples of the MediaTek Helio M70 will already be sent to manufacturers, the first devices based on MediaTek's new flagship SoC are expected to be launched at the beginning of 2020.
