CUBOT King Kong 3 4G phablet: military grade protection smartphone for under $160

The CUBOT King Kong 3 is what's best described as a “rugged phone”. This means that design-wise, it's pretty much the opposite of all modern trends - but that's the trade off for superior protection against the elements. But is this the trade off you will want to make?

CUBOT King Kong 3: thick, heavy and durable

Let’s get this out of the way — if you are looking for the popular thin bezel-free look, you will need to look elsewhere with the CUBOT King Kong 3. As the name itself suggests, the phone is not aiming for the most compact reward. Indeed, when you unpack the CUBOT King Kong 3 and hold it in your hand, it does feel significantly heavier than almost any phone we’ve looked at recently. Measuring 6.4 x 3.08 x 0.52 inches, the phone weighs a mighty 520 grams -  but that's not surprising taking into account all the extra bells and whistles the phone features.

The phone is dark grey, with a textured back and a fingerprint sensor on the back.

CUBOT King Kong 3: supreme element protection

The first thing that jumps off the page when reading the manual was that the CUBOT King Kong 3 can withstand extreme temperatures: from 30 degrees Celsius below zero to 60 degrees Celsius above zero. While the iPhone X, for instance, had the normal working temperature range of zero to 35 degrees Celsius, the CUBOT King Kong 3 seems to be taking things to an an entirely new level. But is it really necessary? For most users, the answer would probably "no" as most of us would have trouble with withstanding extreme temperatures ourselves - let's face it, should we ever find ourselves in either extreme cold or extreme heat, the last thing we'll worry about would be our phone.

With that said, there is a variety of occasions when this working temperature range would be essential: for those working in harsh conditions, hikers and mountaineers, explorers and more.

If you want to take your phone swimming, you can easily do so with the CUBOT King Kong 3. The phone comes with IP68 protection and can be kept underwater at the max depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. Once again, this is a highly useful feature for those working in specific conditions or avid outdoorsmen.

The manufacturer promises the phone to be 99% dustproof. This means that if you drop it in the sand or even dirt, the device will come out unscathed, with all of its ports safely protected from the elements. Now, this is the feature that most users will find applicable to daily life. Most of us have dropped our phone at one time or another and, quite often, the consequences of that were not pleasant.

Speaking of dropping, the phone is said to have withstood over 300 drop tests from the height of 1.5 meters and has come out undamaged.

CUBOT King Kong 3: what's on the inside

Most rugged devices that we have seen place most of the design and manufacturing emphasis on the exterior. What's inside becomes secondary to the outer protection and the only impressive feature of most rugged devices is the strong battery.

The CUBOT King Kong 3 does come with a big capacity battery - 6000mAh. This is perfectly in line with what the phone is intended for — if you are hiking somewhere in the Himalayas, your charging opportunities may be limited. A 6000mAh battery will let you use the phone without a recharge for several days.

Inside, there is the Helio P23, a mainstream CPU for Android based smartphones equipped with 8 ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores and clocking at 2.5GHz. With it, you get 4GB RAM and 64GB storage (expandable further on an SD card up to 128GB). All things considered, this is not a bad offer at all, especially for a rugged device that does not compete for the title of the best media phone.

On the display side, you have a 5.5. inch HD screen (1440x720 resolution) with 18:9 ratio, not bad for an industrial phone in this price range. Naturally, if you are looking for a more media friendly screen, you will be able to find better offers from Xiaomi, for instance, with a similar price tag.

The CUBOT King Kong 3 is not a camera phone but you will be able to take decent pictures nonetheless thanks to the 13MP + 2MP rear cam and an 8MP selfie shooter.

CUBOT King Kong 3: the verdict

The CUBOT King Kong 3 is neither thin nor bezel-less and will not stun you with any hidden functionality like face unlock or a pop up cam. It's an industrial phone, heavy and thick, able to take quite a bit of beating, dropping, drowning and lying around it the dirt. As a primary phone, it would be a great choice for those working in harsh environments and spending most of their time outdoors. However, it would also make a good option for a secondary phone, given the device's rather inexpensive price. Say, if you don't want to take your pricey new iPhone on a skiing expedition or hiking on a rainy day, the CUBOT King Kong 3 may come in really handy.

Having it as your only everyday use smartphone, however, may not be exactly cost-effective. As mentioned earlier, you can find better performing devices with bigger screens in the same price range — but, alas, no extreme temperature protection.
