We are always encouraged to keep an eye on our health on a daily basis. And with summer just around the corner, I am more than excited to try out the Xiaomi Bluetooth Smart Body Fat Scale from GearBest.
Our obsession of getting and staying in shape may be just that - an obsession - but there is no denying the health benefits of keeping an eye on one's weight and body fat. This smart scale promises to do the job well and comes with a really nice set of features.
The Xiaomi Bluetooth Smart Scale measures more than fat and kilograms. The scale uses advanced BIA technology to analyze a number of important parameters including body weight, BMI, bone mass, body water, muscle mass, basal metabolism, body fat rate, visceral fat level, figure, and body score.
√ Simple to use
As soon as I get my hands on the Xiaomi Smart Scale's box, I can't wait to open it. Once I do, I see a square device in stunning glistening white and after studying the scale, I am already impressed with its strong build quality. A smooth white ABS panel and safety-conscious rounded corners give the scale a sturdy feel and beautiful aesthetics.
The top of the scale sports an anti-slip texture with 4 embedded 304L stainless steel electrodes - they are the ones responsible for correctly measuring all the extensive data about your body.
Measuring just 300mm x 300mm x 14.75mm, Xiaomi Smart Body Fat Scale tips the scales at 1.6kg, it is never a burden to carry around with you if you want to tote around on your travels. Its simple and compact style allows it to blend in seamlessly with any decor in your home.
Just step onto the scale and see your weight displayed clearly on the LED screen cleverly hidden underneath the main panel. When you are not using the scale, the screen cannot be seen as it is separated from the main board - a nice touch for a sleek and smooth look.
The back of the scale is equipped with four large feet and a battery compartment, of which four feet are the major part of the whole weight scale. Four large feet not only improve stability on the floor, but also lower the possibility of slip.
Track Your Body Data in Xiaomi App Mi Fit
Xiaomi body fat scale is incredibly simple to use. Just download a Xiaomi App Mi Fit (which is available on iOS and Android platforms) -- exactly the same application used with Xiaomi Mi Band 2 -- in your smartphone first, then pair your smartphone with the Xiaomi body fat scale on the first weigh itself via Bluetooth 4.0.
If you have problem in pairing Xiaomi body fat scale with your smartphone, you can head to How to bind Xiaomi body fat scale with Xiaomi App Mi Fit and follow the described steps.
Mi Fit is built for your ultimate convenience -- no need to bend down to check the results on the LED screen, instead you can see them from the app in real time.
All of your weight data can be saved in Mi Fit app, which support storing up to 16 different people profiles. This would make the Xiaomi body fat scale suitable for sharing with family and friends.
If you prefer to see the bigger picture, rather than numbers, Mi Fit can display all the data in a simple line graph providing you with a great visual for tracking your progress.
Every time after jogging, yoga, gym, walking, shopping or even after the household chores, you can identify the changes in your weight. If you have made great strides during your weight-loss battle, don't hesitate to share the good news with your family and friends.
All in all, Xiaomi body fat scale is a pretty decent smart scale for you, especially those who like sports and concern about their figure.
Once you know more about your body, it's time to put the data to good use - but what does it all actually mean?
Body Fat Rate (BFR)
First, what is Body Fat Rate (BFR)? Body Fat Rate is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass. It includes essential body fat and storage body fat.
This is the reason why a person may look thinner than you while you both have the same height and weight. Following is the BFR comparison table:
|Athletic shape||4% - 9%||8% - 13%|
|Fat is not loose, abdominal muscle block is obvious||10% - 12%||14% - 19%|
|Fat is not loose, abdominal muscles are there but are not obvious||13% - 15%||20% - 22%|
|Fat is not loose but there are no abdominal muscles||16% - 18%||23% - 25%|
|Fat is loose and there are no abdominal muscles||19% - 21%||26% - 28%|
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2. As a rule, BMI is the simplest way evaluate your physical form.
Its value is used to categorize a person's condition as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese.
Underweight: less than 18.5
Healthy weight: 18.5 - 25
Overweight: 25 - 28
Obese: 28 - 32
Severely obese: above 32
However, BMI is not suitable for analyzing a specific body type in which case BFR is more accurate and provides more insight for targeted exercise.
Body weight is used to describe a person's mass measured in kilograms, pounds, or Jin (1Jin = 0.5kg). Xiaomi Smart Scale's weighing scope ranges from 5kg to 150kg and its minimum scale division is 50g. This feature is the same as that in the Xiaomi weight scale. But Xiaomi weight scale seems to have higher accuracy, since it claims itself to be so accurate that it can track the weight change even you just drank a cup of water (100g).
Muscle mass includes smooth muscles, skeletal muscles and water contained in the muscles. Loss of muscle mass will result in a lower basal metabolism and reduce energy expenditure, and you will be prone to gain weight or fall ill. Getting more muscles is helpful for improving basal metabolism and reducing body fat.
|Normal||49.4kg - 59.5kg||36.5 - 42.6kg|
|Good||above 59.5kg||above 42.6kg|
Basal metabolism refers to the lowest energy required to maintain basic life activities, expressed in calories. The basic metabolic rate is calculated by finding out how much energy is consumed by muscle mass, and influences the rate at which a person burns calories and ultimately whether he/she maintains, gains, or loses weight. As a rule, people with a higher basic metabolic rate do not gain weight easily.
You can keep fit with a balanced consumption of meat, fish, soy products and dairy products to increase your muscle mass.
The daily calories needed for an individual is 2100 - 2700 Kcal. For women, 1244 Cal of basic metabolic rate is a borderline, above 1244 Cal is an ideal state. While for men, above 976 Cal will be considered as reaching the goal, indicating you are in a good physical condition.
Bone mass refers to the amount of calcium, phosphorous and other matters contained in the bone. Women with a smaller bone mass caused by weight loss or amenorrhea should pay more attention to this indicator. Try to keep a balanced intake of calcium, enjoy a daily 15 minutes in the sun and make sure to work in at least 20 minutes of exercise into your busy schedule.
|Normal||1.6 - 3.9kg||1.5 - 3.8kg|
|Good||above 3.9kg||above 3.8kg|
This is the amount of water that is contained in the tissues, the blood, the bones and elsewhere in your body. If you are losing weight, you should pay special attention to water consumption to avoid dehydration. The measurements which are taken after you just bathed, drank alcohol, or worked out might not be accurate.
|Normal||55.0% - 65.1%||45.0% - 60.1%|
|Good||above 65.1%||above 60.1%|
Visceral Fat Level
Visceral fat level represents the fat accumulated in the gap of internal organs. High visceral fat level will increase the risk of heart disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and other chronic disease. Visceral fat accumulates easily, but it is very hard to be reduced. You need to maintain a balanced diet and keep aerobic exercise not less than 20 minutes every day.
Normal: below 10
High: 10 - 15
Very high: above 15
The app will categorize your body type into Obese, Overweight, Thick-set, Lacks exercise, Balanced, Balanced muscular, Skinny, Balanced skinny and Skinny Muscular in terms of body fat rate and muscle mass.
Then, the Mi Fit will produce a body score based on all the above nine items of body data analysis.
Important note: all the provided data should be used as reference and should not be regarded as medical advice.
I feel obliged to give the Xiaomi Smart Scale a thumbs up review - as the result I got was 100 (indicates the physical condition is excellent), 167cm height, 58.5kg weight, 23.3% of body fat rate, 21.2 of BMI. Most the data is almost the same as the results I got at my gym. Oh, Jesus! Though this is quite good, I still think there is room for improvement. I need to lower my body fat rate and visceral fat level to get healthier. Well, I guess I should stop here and head to the gym!
So boys and girls, put drop that snack and pick up those dumbbells. After all, the scale doesn't lie.
