DJI Mavic Air 2 or DJI Spark 2 - what will be the new drone from DJI?

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-08-12 9747 0

The last drone novelty from DJ appeared in August 2018 in the form of Mavica 2 Pro and Mavica 2 Zoom - almost a year ago! There's no denying that the producer made us all taste the alleged leaks concerning Phantom 5. When it turned out that this time DJI bet on cameras - Osmo Pocket and Osmo Action, it became practically certain that this time it was finally time to drones.

DJI Spark 2 or Mavic Air 2?

As the theme of the Phantom series continuation has faded away, Mavic Pro has recently received its second version (and even two), everything seems to indicate that a more compact model - the second version of the Spark or Mavic Air series - will soon be released. But what exactly can we expect?

To answer this question, let's analyze the advantages and disadvantages of one of them. Due to the fact that the older model is Spark, and its price among DJ drones is unrivalled (especially in terms of the possibilities it offers), speculations about the upcoming new product, we will base our speculations on its continuation - DJ Spark 2.

DJI Spark 2 - perfect drone?

Released in May 2017, Spark revolutionized the drone market by exploring drone photography for a wider audience. It was then that the curtain of mystery associated with drones fell - affordable price and intelligent flight functions made the average user understand and appreciate the possibilities offered by drones. Spark showed people that their application has a much larger spectrum than just industrial applications.

However, the technology is moving so fast that 2 years is basically a chasm when it comes to electronics.

For this reason we expect that Spark 2 will erase the deficiency associated with some of Spark's parameters, which caused a dilemma - it is better to spend less on Spark or add as much as possible and buy Mavica Air.

DJI left a lot of room for improvement in Spark 2's specifications, which we can expect. Below are some of them.

DJI Spark 2 - specification

● 4K camera and 3-axis gimbal

Spark records in Full HD 1080p resolution in 30 frames/second, which is far from the standards of today's technology. It seems therefore highly probable that DJI Spark 2 with the ability to record at least 4K at 30 fps and FHD 60 fps.

● Extended flight time at Spark 2

Flying with a drone and filming from the air became an entertainment and 16 minutes of flight (in ideal conditions), which in fact give about 13 minutes of pure fun, is definitely not enough. We haven't met ourselves yet, so that the customer wouldn't come back for an extra battery if he didn't choose Spark Fly More Combo.

We expect that the battery in Spark 2 will extend its flight time to 25 minutes.

● Voice commands in the DJ GO 4 application

DJI Spark captured his supporters with easy gesture control. We believe that DJ, acting in the spirit of the ethos of this simplicity, will enable users to control Spark 2 with simple voice commands. After all, who wouldn't want a drone in a critical situation to land or immediately start the RTH procedure as soon as he hears our command.

● 360-degree obstacle avoidance system

The Spark obstacle avoidance system only works from the front. Detecting and avoiding obstacles in Spark 2 located on the side and back of the drone is a vision that definitely calms you down - after all, sensors of detecting and avoiding obstacles will eliminate the situation when a drone sideways collisions with a tree in order to get closer to us.

● More compactness with DJI Spark 2

Weighing only 300 g, the Spark was an ideal option to take on a trip or even a walk in the park. But when we felt on our own skin what the folding arms of the Mavic series meant, it was clear that a lower weight did not necessarily mean easier transport. However, in addition to folding arms, the Spark 2 is supposed to be lighter because of the paddles in the shoulders. The manufacturer is unlikely to reduce the weight of the drone by reducing it, which would affect its stability.

● Greater speed, greater flight range

Spark's range is far from the standards to which we are accustomed to Mavic series, so we hope that the range will reach at least Mavica Air, i.e. 2 km in CE mode (European) and 4 km in FCC.

Following this optimistic scenario, it is possible that the speed of Spark 2 will also increase - from the maximum 50 to about 70 km/h.

As for the type of transmission, we do not expect DJI to suddenly decide to pack OcuSyns 2.0 technology in a drone from a lower price shelf, but we hope that Spark 2 will be equipped with enhanced WiFi, similar to the one from the first version of Mavica Air.

DJI Spark 2 - when and for how much?

In fact, Spark 2 can appear at any time, but although DJI likes to surprise, recently he allowed us to feel at least a little more confident and on his official website placed a clock counting down the time to the next release - this was in May in the case of Osmo Action.

As for the price, remembering that when Spark entered the market in 2017, its market value was 399 $  (for the drone itself, without the controller!) and 549$ PLN for the combo set. Based on this, we assume that Spark 2 will oscillate within the price range of Mavica Air at the time of its release, i.e. 499$ for a basic set and 699 $ for a combo set.
