DJI Mavic Mini: the cheapest, most compact and lightest drone in the range

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-10-31 1111 0

DJI has made it a habit to introduce a new drone every year. While some were waiting for a Spark 2, it is finally a new member of the Mavic family who lands in 2019: the Mavic Mini, a quadrirotor weighing only 249 g.

The Mavic Air having been introduced in January 2018 and the renewed Mavic Pro a few months later in the summer, we were waiting for a replacement for the Spark in 2019, before eventually seeing the Mavic 3 arrive later. And it is more or less done, with the difference that DJI does not present a Spark 2, but a Mavic Mini. This one is even positioned at a lower price than the Spark since it is launched at €399 and is therefore at the entry level of the manufacturer, targeting the general public above all, rather than image professionals.

249 g only for 30 min of autonomy

That's why DJI has focused on designing a drone weighing less than 250 g. This objective has been achieved, as the Mavic Mini reaches exactly 249 g. Even better, it logically follows the foldable design of its big brothers, which makes it particularly compact: only 140 x 82 x 57 mm, which makes it very easy to carry with you. When unfolded, it becomes a little wider than the Spark, but remains in the category of small quadrirotors with a width of 202 mm and a length of 160 mm (respectively 290 mm and 245 mm taking into account the propellers). This does not prevent it from flying at speeds up to 47 km/h in sport mode and resisting winds of 28 km/h, although it is not necessary to wait for as good a velocity as the other Mavic models.

Thanks to its light weight, the Mavic Mini beats all records for autonomy, with DJI advancing up to 30 minutes of flight. Even if it will be more often necessary to count on 25 min, it remains very good when we know that a Mavic Air is announced for 21 min and flies as a rule more often during 16 to 18 min according to our tests. In the range, only the Mavic 2s manage to fly for that long and Parrot's competitor Anafi stops at 23 min (for 25 min announced).

A stabilized camera, but no 4K UHD

Great feats, knowing that the Mavic Mini still carries a camera stabilized by a 3-axis nacelle. It is therefore not a simple toy since it was necessary to justify its presence in the Mavic series. Entry-level, however, the Mavic Mini's capacities are limited. If he is able to shoot at 60 fps in Full HD, the image definition stops at 2.7K 30p, when you would expect Ultra HD 4K. The Mavic Air therefore keeps this advantage. He also keeps his obstacle sensors for himself, the Mavic Mini having to be satisfied with his lower sensors used to stabilize himself horizontally and vertically.

It will also be necessary to do without image recognition and therefore Active Track and Follow Me technologies that allow other Mavic to follow moving subjects. The Mavic Mini has four Quickshots modes: Drone, Rocket, Circle and Spiral.

Officially, DJI points out that these absences were inevitable to succeed in offering such a lightweight folding quadrirotor. It is also for this reason that he justifies the absence of OcuSync transmission technology, the video signal being transmitted to the remote control, then to the smartphone in 720p over a range of up to 2 km.

DJI Mavic Mini:price and availability

The DJI Mavic Mini is already available at the recommended public price of €399 with one battery, or as a Fly More Combo package with two additional batteries, a three-battery charger and a carrying case for an additional €100.
