DJI Mavic Mini video released, weigh less than 250 g, DJI Mavic air 2 or DJI Spark successor

August 13th, DJI announced the third generation of gimbal, instead of DJ Mavic Mini. But it appeared in the first movie. The specification that a drone will weigh less than 250 grams has also leaked out.

DJI Mavic Mini is an officially unannounced drone, which will be a great revolution according to leaks news. It would equipped the capabilities of Mavic Air at the price of Spark. And although the premiere did not take place on August 13th. As previously thought, more information leaked into the network, revealing much more details.

DJI Mavic Mini will be really miniature

The first video showing the Mavic Mini shows that the drone fits in your hand. The design looks like a miniature version of the Mavic Pro, while the body is the size of a Spark. When the arms and propellers are folded together, the equipment becomes extremely compact.

A specification leaked out that reveals a lot of key information about the drone. The equipment will be available for purchase with an additional controller, which is very good news, as control from a smartphone is barely a prosthesis. DJI Mavic Mini will be able to fly for 18 minutes on one charge. In practice, this time will probably drop to around 15 minutes.

The range (theoretically) will be up to 5 km, but the Mavic Mini will be based on connectivity through "improved Wi-Fi", a system known from Mavic Air. In practice, it allows for trouble-free flights up to a distance of 500 m, although it is actually possible to fly a drone for up to 2 km. The maximum speed of the Mavic Mini will be 50 km/h. The Mavic Mini will be equipped with a system for detecting objects before and after a drone.

The camera will be placed on a three-axis gimbal similar to that of Mavic Air. The specification says 60 Mbps in 4K at 30 fps, 2.7 fps in 60 fps and 1080p in 120 fps. The photos will have a resolution of 12 megapixels, but the specification only mentions the JPG format. So far, we don't know if it's just a mistake, or if the drone will be blocked from taking pictures in RAW mode. The sensor will be 1/2.3 inches in size.

DJI Mavic Mini will weigh less than 250g

The weight limit of 250 g is very important because of the law in force in the United States, and soon also in the European Union. Drones weighing up to 250 g are treated by the authorities as toys, so the law is the least restrictive towards them.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all drone weights from 250 g to 25 kg to be registered. Flights in an unregistered drone are subject to civil and criminal penalties. Registration costs $5, and at the end of the process the drone receives its own registration number, which must be placed on the device during the flight. Flights with drones weighing more than 250 g are subject to stricter regulations.

In Poland the weight limit of a drone is currently 600 g. Lighter drones can be used for recreational flying even in cities, although it is not possible to do it near airports. Greater restrictions apply to heavier drones.

What is important, from June 2020, two regulations will come into force which will harmonise the aviation law in the European Union. They refer to drones. Five classes of drones will be specified, the smallest one, C0, will be drones weighing up to 250 g (and maximum speed limited to 19 m/s, i.e. about 68 km/h). Such drones will not need to be registered. On the other hand, drones with a higher mass will be subject to much more burdensome bureaucracy and greater restrictions in terms of flights.

In addition, DJI itself announced that from 2020 it will place an AirSense receiver in all its drones weighing over 250 g, which will detect the ADS-B signal emitted by airplanes and helicopters. This will give DJI a warning when an aircraft is nearby. This is supposed to be a key element improving safety in the sky. However, the AirSense system has to be installed in the drone and supplied with power. The lack of this element in the Mavic Mini will allow you to lower the weight (little, but in this design counts every gram) and allow for a longer flight time.

It looks like DJI Mavic Mini will be a perfect drone

DJI Mavic Mini is expected to debut in the fourth quarter of 2019, at the price of 399 dollars. It is the same as the current cost of DJI Spark.

If the leaks are confirmed, Mavic Mini will be a breakthrough. From a legal point of view, a drone will belong to the category of toys, but from a practical point of view, it will allow you to record 4K from a fully fledged gimbal. At the moment, the only disagreement in the specification seems to be the lack of RAW photos. It is very possible that DJI is afraid to add this feature for fear that many customers will choose Mavic Mini instead of the more expensive Mavic Air or Pro.
