Google Duo: Group video calls now usable globally
By Daniel Camilo 2019-05-25 748 0
Users can have up to eight people join a call at the same time (a lower number than FaceTimes 32 and Skypes 50 possible participants). In some countries, group calls have gradually gone live this month, but now everyone can take advantage of it.
In addition to Skype and Apple's FaceTime offerings, Google Duo (App Store Link) is also a great way to communicate with your family, friends, or work colleagues via video call. The application is available for iOS and Android, and can also be used via a web interface on Macs / PCs and smart displays. The installation requires at least iOS 10.0 or later and 136 MB of free space on the Apple device. The Google team also provides German localization.
The video calls in Google Duo can be carried out both over a WLAN network, as well as on the way in the mobile data network. For a particularly easy handling, there is a simple user interface, in which a contact can be selected by a single tap and then called directly. A "cuckoo" function allows you to see a live video preview - so you can see before accepting which person is currently calling. Also, the sending of video messages, if no one takes, is integrated, as well as an audio chat when video calls are just not feasible.
From now on, Google Duo can also start group video calls. These can be carried by up to eight people. This is still less than Skype with a maximum of 50 participants or FaceTime for up to 32 people, but for a brief consultation with the team or a shared family chat this number of participants should be absolutely sufficient. Google Duo's group call feature has been gradually unlocked in several countries this month - now it's also available globally.
Have you tried Google Duo and used it for video or audio calls? If so, how satisfied were you with the service? Or do you use completely different apps for this purpose? We are looking forward to your experiences.
