Google Nest Hub (Google Home Hub) Smart Screen Speaker Latest Unboxing Review

By  Joe Horner 2019-08-26 1552 0

Last year, Google launched its first smart speaker, the Google Home Hub, which is now renamed as Google Nest Hub. The name change is only to reflect a shift in Google's smart home division, now known as Google Nest. It is a continuation of the Google Home Hub, but the Nest Hub is larger and officially went on sale in India today (Aug. 26). Although the names are different, Google guarantees that the two are of the same material. So how does Google Nest Hub work?

Design of the Google Nest Hub

The Google Hest Hub looks like a tablet mounted on a smart speaker. It is easy to match, there are four colors to choose from: White, dark gray, pink, light green, light green and Google Home Mini are the same color.

The Google Hest Hub has a 7-inch display that is smaller. Google says the reason for keeping the Nest Hub small is that it wants to put it on the nightstand or on the bathroom counter. That's why the model doesn't come with a camera. What looks like a camera on the screen is actually an ambient light sensor.

But Google Hest Hub Max, which was launched in the second half of the year, comes with a camera that can be used for video calls, allowing remote housekeeping, subscribing, and so on.

The Hest Hub is a bit inconvenient in terms of input. There is a mute button and volume on the back of the microphone, which makes it impossible to adjust the angle of the screen. It's okay to look at it on the table, but it looks like it's hard to put it on a high level, such as on a bookshelf. Considering that the Hest Hub is also an excellent photo frame, it would be perfect to have an adjustable bracket.

Screen and sound of the Google Nest Hub

The Nest Hub has a screen resolution of 1024x600, which is clear enough and has a good view. Although it is a bit dazzling in a dark environment, it performs quite well under other conditions. Instead of installing a camera, Nest Hub installs an ambient EQ light sensor that adjusts the brightness and temperature of the screen to match the light of the room. It is perfect for making picture frames, and it is almost no different from a real picture frame.

When you don't use Nest Hub, you can use it as a photo frame, and seeing photos instead of news or weather forecasts makes Nest Hub look more like furniture than simple electronics.

More importantly, AI means that Hub will only show the good pictures you take and filter out the blurry ones. If you don't want to put your own photos, you can also show artistic photos. When the light is completely dimmed, the, Nest Hub will also be dark, turning into a bedside alarm clock so that it won't bother you while you're sleeping.

As a speaker, Google Nest Hub is enough. Google deals with sound quality, which is lower than Google Home and Home Mini. However, in use, it is far from the Sonos system or Google Home Max. The sound of, Nest Hub is limited when the treble is played. However, it can be used in combination with other Google Home.

The advantage of having a screen is that you can view what you're playing at any time, including Spotify, but the full APP, doesn't appear on the screen. You can only see a simple player.

Smart home control

In controlling smart home, the next Home view is the first. It can display all the devices that can be connected, such as thermostats, lights, cameras, etc., for easy and quick access. If you have a Nest or other brand thermostats, click on the picture to adjust the temperature and switch between modes.

Although the options here are not as subtle as the various APP, for many people, the basic operation is enough. Click on the Nest thermostat to heat, cool, and select ECO mode. Click on Philips Hue bulb to adjust brightness and switch colors. Click on the camera to see it directly.

Google has also redesigned its smartphone apps so you can see Home view first. This system is much easier to use than the systems provided by Google in the past and better than Alexa's APP.

Nest Hub can only use Bluetooth and WiFi to control the smart home. The new Amazon echo comes with a ZigBee hub that makes it easy to control gadgets such as Philips Hue.

Google Nest Hub: doesn't have a camera

Let's talk about the camera, because it is sensitive to privacy issues, so Google Nest Hub does not have a camera. Google wants people to rest assured that Nest Hub is in the room and that a camera on the nightstand will make a lot of people feel uncomfortable.

Amazon Echo show and Spot have cameras, and video chat has become a major feature of smart speakers with screens.

Google Nest Hub: Google Smart Assistant, Multimedia experience

When we reviewed other features, we felt that Android Things was not very easy to use. On Nest Hub, Google actually uses a customized version of its Cast platform, but the experience is almost the same as other smart tape speakers we've used.

Intelligent ecosystems as a whole are still very young. Although you can make full use of Google Assistant, and YOU Tube is very easy to use, you can just ask "Google, how do I cut onions" and so on. But other features don't work so well. For example, I try to call Uber, which can tell me the route and the estimated cost, but it still doesn't make calls directly if you don't turn on your phone.

With the arrival of more third parties, these difficulties are expected to be resolved. But Google also said it didn't want the Google Nest Hub to be an Android tablet experience. So don't expect Chrome browsers or other APP to appear.
