Google’s Game-Streaming Stadia starts in November 2019. But what is Stadia, how does it work, what is behind it and what do I need as a player besides a fast internet connection? We answer all questions briefly and concisely.
What is Stadia?
Stadia is Google's streaming platform, tailor-made for games. Thanks to its many years of experience with video streaming via YouTube, the search engine group now wants to gain a foothold in games and benefit from its well networked server infrastructure and huge data centers.
When will Stadia appear?
Google plans to publish Stadia in November 2019 in 14 countries, including Germany.
What does Stadia cost?
Google will finance the cost of game streaming via a subscription model. Games will cost extra - with the exception of Destiny 2 - and can probably be purchased for release in a kind of Stadia online shop.
Meanwhile Google is planning two subscriptions: Stadia Pro and Stadia Base.
The pro subscription will be available in the Stadia Founder's Edition from launch and will be offered monthly at a price of 9.99 euros.
The base subscription is free, but offers fewer features and will not be available until 2020.
What does the subscription "Stadia Base" offer?
●Streams up to 1080p/FullHD resolution with 60 fps and stereo sound.
●all games available for purchase.
●play all (purchased) games in the Chrome browser on any computer or Pixel 3 or 3a smartphone (more smartphones to follow).
What does the "Stadia Pro" subscription offer?
●Streams up to 4K resolution with HDR, 60 fps and 5.1 surround sound.
●free games (access possible as long as the pro subscription is active).
●exclusive discounts on games to buy.
●for a limited time, the pro subscription grants unlimited access to Destiny 2 and all previous add-ons.
●all advantages of the base subscription.
How can I play to release?
If you want to play for the release of Stadia in November, you have to buy the Stadia Founder's Edition as a pre-order according to Google.
What is included in the Stadia Founder's Edition?
Who wants to play for the release of Stadia in November 2019, needs according to Google the Founder's Edition. This is a 129 Euro bundle of hardware and software.
The delivery of the Stadia Founder's Edition includes:
●Limited edition of the Stadia Controller in the colour Night Blue.
●Google Chromecast Ultra.
●Access code for three months Stadia Pro.
●Buddy Pass for three months to share Stadia Pro with a friend.
●Be the first to get his player name on Stadia.
Should I pre-order Stadia?
If you want to be the first to try out Stadia, you can't avoid a pre-order - Google even requires this with the Founder's Edition.
However, not all questions about Stadia have been answered at the moment. We don't know how high the latency is and how good the image quality of the stream will be. Your internet line will also contribute significantly to the quality of the streaming via Stadia.
We advise you to wait for further information and details as well as first independent tests on Stadia. The best thing to do next year is to get an overview of Stadia yourself with your free Base subscription.
Which games appear for Stadia?
Google has announced over 30 games for Stadia so far. Many of them will be playable at the launch in November 2019.
These include Metro: Exodus, Doom Eternal, Boraerland 3 and The Division 2. Games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Watch Dogs:Legion have also been announced, but will only be released after the launch of Stadia.
Do I have to buy games at Stadia?
Despite a subscription model, players with Pro (and Base) subscriptions must buy games. According to Google, the pro subscription should also include free games, such as Destiny 2 (for an undefined period), which titles will be included in the future, but is still unknown.
Google wants to make Stadia, a streaming service based on Linux and Vulcan, as attractive as possible, and has already made 100 developer kits available for game studios, according to its own figures.
With Stadia Games and Entertainment, Google has also founded its own studio under the direction of Jade Raymond, presumably to help others port to Stadia and possibly create their own games.
How does Stadia work?
The games run on powerful Google servers, are calculated in the cloud and streamed to your devices.
On which devices does Stadia run?
According to Google, Stadia should work on the following devices to start:
●Television (with Chromecast).
●Desktop PC (via Chrome browser).
●Notebook (via Chrome browser).
●Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3a.
A Chromecast Ultra will be required for operation on the home TV, a separate app for pixel smartphones and all other devices will use Stadia via Google's Chrome browser. Stadia will support other devices and smartphones at a later date.
How do I serve Stadia?
Stadia is operated by controller, mouse or keyboard, touch screens of smartphones (and later also tablets) should work as well.
Do I need the Stadia Controller?
The controller is optional, according to Google you can also play with existing pads like the Xbox One controller and of course with keyboard and mouse. Google offers the pre-orderable Stadia Controller in the colors Just Black, Clearly White and Wasabi for 69 Euro each.
The Stadia Controller should connect via WLAN directly over the Internet to Google's data centers, so the latency should be low.
At the push of a button, he will also be able to stream your gameplay to YouTube and help you with tricky game passages via Google Assistant.
What is Stadia Stream Connect and Crowd Play?
These are Stadia exclusive multiplayer features that developers can integrate into their games, for example the upcoming Ghost Recon: Breakpoint uses these features.
Stream Connect shows you live excerpts of up to three players in the current game, and via crowd play streamers can bring viewers into the current game at the touch of a button.
What hardware and performance can we expect?
Stadia hardware is expected to be more powerful than Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro combined.
Google is relying on a (probably multi-core) AMD processor with 2.7 GHz and multithreading, an AMD graphics chip with 10.7 TFLOPS as well as HBM2 memory and 16 GB RAM used system-wide.
How fast does my Internet line have to be?
To use Stadia you have to have a download rate of at least 10 Mbit/s, for the best possible experience you need 35 Mbit/s according to Google.
Google offers its own speed test, which checks your internet connection within 30 seconds and assesses how well Stadia should run with you.
What is the latency of Stadia?
This cannot be said exactly yet, because Stadia is still in development and is also dependent on your internet connection, WLAN or LAN and the devices used.
Digital Foundry was able to test Stadia in March 2019 and measured a delay of 166 ms in the WLAN with a Full HD stream at 30 fps. A PC with LAN connection reaches 133 ms at 30 fps and 100 ms at 60 fps.
What is the quality of the streams?
The quality of the streams you receive depends on the one hand on your internet connection and on the other hand on the compression used and the video codec used. According to Digital Foundry, artefacts were still visible in March 2019, especially with fast movements and on large screens.
In which resolution does Stadia stream?
Stadia Streams wants to deliver Google with a resolution of up to 4K with 60 fps, HDR and 5.1 surround sound. If your Internet speed is slower, Stadia will stream at lower resolutions (1080p and 720p). For an undisclosed date, Google also plans to stream in 8K resolution at up to 120 fps.
Can I stream with Stadia itself?
With Stadia it should be easy to stream yourself, no additional hardware is needed - your current gameplay should be able to be shared via YouTube at the push of a button and even work with weak Internet lines.
The stream can be routed directly from the Staida servers to the Youtube servers. So it should also be possible to play in Full HD, but to place your stream on YouTube in 4K resolution.
