Here are the differences between the Nintendo Switch Lite and the original Nintendo Switch

By  Goraud Mazanec 2019-07-11 9933 0

The Nintendo Switch Lite is already a reality, it will arrive in September for $200. What are the differences with the original Switch? Take a look at the comparison between the two consoles.

After several months of rumours and leaks, Nintendo finally introduced the Switch Lite, a smaller, inexpensive variant that dispenses with some features of the hybrid game console. No doubt, the highlight is its totally portable approach, as it leaves aside the ability to connect to the TV via the dock. The Switch Lite will be available on September 20 for $200.

However, the surprise announcement raised doubts about the differences between the two proposals. And is that the Kyoto company itself has revealed new details in recent hours, managing to expand the list of components that differ between the two consoles. That's why we made a comparison that will solve your concerns.

Size and screen

The Switch Lite's body reduces the size of its body and screen to 91.1 x 208 x 13.9 millimeters and 5.5 inches, respectively. For its part, the original Switch reaches 102 x 239 x 13.9 millimeters and has a 6.2" panel. However, the size of the screen is not the only thing you should consider, as the Lite version does not adjust the brightness automatically, but manually.

Nintendo Switch Lite vs. original Nintendo Switch

While it was originally believed that the CPU was exactly the same, The Verge portal discovered that this is not the case. The Switch Lite integrates a new processor and new storage chips. With respect to the first component, it is not known at this time whether it will help reduce game load times or make the operating system faster. One of its main benefits is that it would be more energy efficient, which would have increased autonomy.

Controls, HD vibration and motion sensors

The Switch Lite does not have the detachable controls of the original console. Instead they opted for fixed controls, which do not incorporate the HD vibration system. However, you will have no problem connecting Joy-Con, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or other manufacturers' controllers wirelessly, ideal for enjoying cooperative or competitive modes with other people.

Another point to consider is that the motion sensors are inside the Joy-Con. Therefore, the Lite variant alone cannot take advantage of this feature in compatible games. This does not mean that these titles do not work, as the capabilities of the sensors will simply be replaced by other mechanical ones. Remember that you will always have the option to connect the Joy-Con separately.

Battery performance

According to Nintendo, the autonomy of the Switch Lite increases by 25% (3-7 hours) compared to the original hardware (2.5-6.5 hours). But that depends on the game you're enjoying. For example, in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild you'll get up to 4 hours of battery time on the new console versus 3 hours on the original Switch.

Connecting to the TV

As mentioned earlier, the Switch Lite is a fully portable console; it dispenses with the option of connecting to the TV via HDMI. Of course, both the dock and the mentioned cable will not be included in the box, they are not compatible.

Other details

In the new console we find the D-Pad, a feature that many people have requested for Joy-Con, mainly to enjoy fighting games. On the other hand, the Switch Lite does not have the back tab that serves as a support, so you will have to resort to accessories manufactured by third parties.

What about game compatibility? You don't have to worry about anything. The entire catalogue released since 2017 works seamlessly in the Nintendo Switch Lite, as do those that arrive in the future. If you want to purchase the console and share your digital library with the original hardware, you can log in to the same Nintendo account and set one console as primary and one as secondary. In the table below you can see all the comparative data.
