Huawei FreeBuds Lite vs. Apple AirPods 2: Huawei promises more battery life and water resistance

By  GB Blog Official 2019-03-30 19216 0

The Huawei FreeBuds Lite is a pair of true wireless Bluetooth earphones newly released at Huawei P30 series smartphones launch conference on March 26, which is definitely out to take on Apple AirPods 2. The Huawei FreeBuds Lite looks very similar to the AirPods 2, and it offers over 12 hours of audio per charge in their wireless case and features an IPX4 waterproof rating. How do the Huawei FreeBuds Lite compare to the Apple AirPods 2? Let’s find out.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite vs. Apple AirPods 2: AirPods-like design

On the outside, the FreeBuds Lite look very similar to the Apple AirPods 2: you will see the same white stem, the same signature white color, etc. You will see a Huawei logo imprinted on the earbud’s stem. The main difference is in the earpiece itself: the FreeBuds Lite features a protuberance that gets deeper into your ear canal, which helps to keep the earbud in place. The Huawei FreeBuds Lite also features an infrared sensor that detects when you have the earphones in your ear. This makes the Huawei FreeBuds Lite a good option for workouts and an active lifestyle — perhaps, an even more suitable one than the Apple AirPods 2.

Another upgrade on the Huawei FreeBuds Lite (compare to the previous version, the Huawei FreeBuds) is IPx4 waterproof protection. This, again, makes the earbuds a suitable option for athletic activities.

Another difference from Apple’s AirPods 2 is the charging case. The Huawei FreeBuds Lite are stored in its charging box horizontally compared to the vertical storage inside Apple’s charging case.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite vs. Apple AirPods 2: 12 hours of battery life?

There is not too much information currently available on the FreeBuds Lite.

What we know for sure is that these are true wireless earbuds and this means that there will be no wires needed to connect the earphones to the phone or to each other. In this aspect, they are exactly the same as the Apple AirPods 2.

According to Huawei, the Huawei FreeBuds Lite will offer an astounding 12 hours of battery life — this is 5 hours more than what is available with the Apple AirPods 2. With that, it is not yet clear what “12 hours of battery life” mean exactly: will the earbuds themselves be capable of producing this amount of power, is this accomplished with the help of the dedicated charging case or, is the 12-hour battery life only offered on standby.

There is no news yet as to any improvements have been to the charging case on the part of the Huawei FreeBuds Lite — but some sources to hint that the buds may be coming with a Qi-charging enabled case. With that, we know that the Apple AirPods 2 feature a new and improved charging case that can be charged wirelessly.

Just like the Apple AirPods 2, the Huawei FreeBuds Lite in-ear headphones are touch-enabled. This means that you won’t find any buttons anywhere on the buds. Instead, all the control is accomplished by light tapping on one or both of the earpieces. For instance, a double-tap on the left earbud activates the voice assistant; double rapping on the right earbud will play and pause music; when you get a call, you can double tap on either of the earbuds to answer it and then to hang up.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite vs. Apple AirPods 2: sound quality

As we keep mentioning in most of our true wireless earbuds reviews, we should not be expecting pro-grade sound quality on true wireless ear pieces — at  least, when we compare them to professional audio equipment like Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic.

With that, the Apple AirPods 2 do manage to offer a very decent level of sound quality and, if the previous version of Huawei’s FreeBuds are any indication, the Huawei FreeBuds Lite do as well.

The company promises that the earphones’ dynamic drivers paired with independent equalization (EQ) will achieve a crisp treble, natural alto & deep bass.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite vs. Apple AirPods 2: the verdict

As the market of true wireless earbuds is becoming saturated, simply being an AirPods clone doesn’t really cut it anymore. From what we know so far, the Huawei FreeBuds Lite don’t seem to offer any groundbreaking new capabilities that would put the new buds ahead of the AirPods 2. With that, you will be able to purchase the FreeBuds Lite for about $132 — which is significantly lower than the $199 price tag of the AirPods 2 with the charging case.

For those not interested in true wireless earphone, Huawei’s new FreeLace earbuds may be an interesting option with 9.2mm titanium-plated drivers and 18 hours of battery life on a full charge.
